Calipari

The worst part is that it is all gauranteed with no performance incentives. If this was a public company the board would be under serious fire for this contract.

And if the NBA develops the D league further and the some of the top 20 guys skip school to play in the "minors" for a year or 2, Calipari will come back to the pack in terms of attracting talent.

I don't think the D League could ever come close to giving the top 20 types the kind of exposure they get playing in the Final Four. Or for that matter, just playing home games at UK. They lead the country in attendance most years.

He has earned the right to the guaranteed money. His recruiting is out of this world and he wins everywhere he goes. The salary figure is just absurd, though. It wil have a big residual effect on the college game.

The D league doesn't have a shot to threaten college basketball. Fans will flock to college games because of the names on the front of the jersey...not the back. You think UK fans care if they win a national championship with or without the top 25 playing in college basketball? It's more about drinking, fun, bragging rights, school pride, and other social aspects.

It is a public school. So his salaray comes out of the taxpayer's pockets.

BTW-So does Nick Saban who makes close to $10 million with incentives at Bama. And the President of Alabama makes no apologies. Calls it the best investment the school and the taxpayers of Bama could make at least with regards to intercolleigate athletics.

UK Basketball doesn't cost the taxpayers a thing. They are very profitable even with Cal's salary. I suspect you knew that already, though.

If you are saying it funds itself you are probably correct.

However John Calipari is a PUBLIC employee of the State of Kentucky, much like the Governor and state legislators. That is a fact.

No executive anywhere ever should have a 100% gauranteed contract

Agreed. But the golden parachutes in corporate America amount to the same thing. Execs of bankrupt airlines, car companies, retailers, failed banks, etc make fortunes on their way out the door.

You should examine the compensation packages to woo a top executive to a leading corporation - salary, stock, perks. To get a top guy, corporations will guarantee anything they need to secure that person, and even when it doesn't work out, the stock options alone are often incredible.

I hate Cal, but he's worth every penny. If he bailed for the pros, there aren't many people who could have kept Kentucky at the level he's gotten them at with regard to recruiting.

Nobody in the country could come close to what Cal has done at Kentucky. His recruiting is out of this world. He has been there long enough now that he's starting to get some highly ranked recruits to return as juniors...the top 25 PG he just added could be a four year player. Whenever he has veterans alongside his fantastic freshman, his teams are nearly unbeatable.

The best part for UK, is that he doesn't have to do a single thing crooked. He gets kids to the NBA and they do well when they get there. Boeheim can't make the same claim. Nobody can match him on that level and kids will continue to flock to him. I'm glad UK is my #2 school now. I am going to embrace that more to balance out the misery of being a Mets, St. John's, Knicks, and Giants fan.

I think his base salary is only 400k or so, a lot of that is for endorsements and appearances. His UK radio show, UK tv show, camps etc

And I agree entirely with gman, no chief executive ever has his a 100% guaranteed compensation. Also it would be hard to argue that calipari 's value is double that of Izoo self etc. And his peers are the baseline when they start negotiations.

Calipari as a salesperson is at the highest echelons of college coaches. He is also matched with a school that is at the highest echelon in terms of attractiveness to a recruit. Almost anyone who has coached at UK over the past 40 years has been able to recruit well, but Calipari is the best of them. In that regard, he toughest challenge is getting a bunch of top 20 freshmen recruits to contribute immediately. When they do, the best of them will be gone in one or two seasons. He must constantly reload, and play with NBA talent that has no college experience. Since he is universally regarded as an average to below average game coach, it demonstrates that recruiting trumps coaching. Because of his success at UK, with no end in sight, he deserves the salary he is paid because he should compete for a national championship almost every season.

Misery being a Giants fan????? Where have you been hiding the last ten years?????

"Doesn't have to do a single thing crooked", LOL, that's rich.

At this pont in his career--going back 5 year even--the guy doesn't have to cheat at all. He can be straight as an arrow, becuase the kids will play for him. Nobody has a better track record the last decade with getting kids to the pros.

He gets the kids who would be drafted straight into the pros if the rule was not changed. All he has to do is get out of their path on their way to the NBA.
