C. Jones / N.Y. Post

Great to hear...I just hope this kid doesn't get caught up in the hype machine. We haven't even played a game yet for god's sake. Let the exhibitions/regular season decide how good he really is. At the very least though, he sounds like a solid guy off the bench.

From everything we keep reading and hearing about CJ he sounds like a great pick-up who with continued hard work and great attitude could develop into a very solid four year player.
Lets face it, with commitments from Orlando, Jakaar and Chris O there was no reason for the staff to offer unless they really saw something that they liked.

What hype machine? He was under recruited and is being praised by the staff for how well he's transitioned so far.

LOL, he wasn't on the Times Square billboard nor is he listed anywhere as an NBA draft prospect. Why would he be gassed up?

He's only being mentioned because Lavin gave him props during the media day.

Despite all the attention (even hype, in some cases) he's been getting, I'm not expecting much from Jones this coming season or anticipating substantial PT. The way I look at it, whatever positives he delivers will be purely a pleasant -- and welcomed -- surprise.

Well said. I am right with you on that. I believe Lav offered this kid because he saw he had potential down the road. I think now he realizes that Jones has value right now as well. He's really our only banger. GG's strength simply does not translate to the court.

I really liked Coach Lavin's comment about assist to turnover ratio. For a big that is very good stuff. Too often in the past our players treated the rock like a hand grenade. I can't wait to see if CJ is a true sleeper. In Lavin we trust.

In terms of the eight new players on the St. John's roster, much of the attention has gone to forward JaKarr Sampson, center Chris Obekpa and guard Jamal Branch -- all ranked among the ESPN 100 as high school seniors.

But Lavin singled out Christian Jones on Tuesday, gushing about him on multiple occasions.

"Christian Jones has probably been as consistent as any player on the team," Lavin said. "With his playmaking on the interior, his brute strength at the rim in terms of finishing, his nimble feet, his speed to run rim to rim, his ability to get above the square and flush 'em home -- he is really, really special."

Jones, a 6-foot-7, 222-pound forward, was the final player of the recruiting class to come aboard. "He’s gonna be a real treat for our fans to watch," Lavin said. "We didn’t know coming in the degree he could help right out of the gate."

media day tidbits

I'm excited. Lavin has seen many great players and to bestow this praise on a freshmen, Jones must be good.

baby barkley?

Jones, a 6-foot-7, 222-pound freshman forward, attended IMG Academy (Fla.) for one year of prep school before coming to St. John's. Last season, Jones averaged 12 points and five rebounds. Though Jones has a lot of size, he can handle the basketball like a player at the '1' or '2.' His muscular frame is also good for clearing out space in the lane while slashing and finishing strong at the rim - contact or no contact.

The Arlington, Texas native noted that he really liked that St. John's is a New York City team, as well as the fact that he is able to play basketball with a childhood friend, sophomore guard Jamal Branch. Jones mentioned that he has known Branch since they were in the eighth grade, and that having the opportunity to play alongside him was one of the reasons he chose St. John's.

"Me and Jamal go back - way back - to the beginning of AAU," said Jones of his former Team Texas mate. "And, actually, I played D'Angelo [Harrison] in high school."

"When we're on the court, it flows together, like, brings back how we played before," said Jones. "Everybody knows each other. When I first got here, I didn't really know all the newcomers, but I did see those who were here last year and how they get along with each other. And the new players - I got adjusted to them pretty fast."

Having experienced a number of team practice sessions with his Red Storm teammates, Jones used one word to characterize the squad: "hardworking."
