Brooklyn's Scholar Athlete Basketball Games at Barclays Center

I assume this Brooklyn event will be a major recruiting opportunity for St John's men and women's basketball? I'm new to following NY basketball and haven't heard of this showcase. How important is it to St John's recruiting?

Are some players already recruited (for example, Posh Alexander) participating?

They should change the name. Qualifying to play with a 75 average doesn't seem all that scholarly.

To be eligible to play in the PSAL, you only need to pass three classes with a 65 and also pass gym. This is the reason a lot of city kids do not qualify and end up taking the JUCO route.

If the PSAL was really concerned, they would make having a 75 average the minimum requirement to be eligible to play high school basketball, and not just for a supposed high school All Star game.

The program we had at Bronx Psychiatric Center to train people in recovery from substance use disorder in how to do drug counseling with clients who had both mental illness and substance use problems, included in its ranks of recovering students at least two NBA draft choices, and multiple all-city and all-state players. At their best they probably would beat most STJ teams of the last 20 years.

Every time this board collapses in to the drug-related illness or crime of a ball player, or the betrayal of young athletes by malignant educational systems, it feels like I am being thrown back in to the world of pain from which I seek respite by coming to redmen.com.

I'm glad there is a showcase like this for college scouts to see kids they may have overlooked.

The kids have to study to earn the required 75 gpa. A lot of these kids wouldn't show up for class if they weren't on a sports team.

Sports is just one of several ways that kids can get scholarships for college.
