Braica named Northeast Conference Coach of Year

Good for him = a very nice person from what I saw.

Maybe if LIU, St. Francis etc play games at the new Barkley's Center they will be able to recruit better! Good to see local teams doing well. The Blackbirds and the Terriers.

Have to admit, I always thought Braica was pretty useless as an assistant here. He's proved me wrong.

Casey's not bad at C.W. Post, either. I think on top of all of Norm's other problems, he was too stubborn to listen to the guys sitting next to him.

I think KOB said Braica was a good recruiter -- he was the one who landed Burrell, if I remember correctly.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves lol. His team is 15-15 with decent talent and just lost its last three games, including its only conference tournament game to end the season. They beat NJIT and probably the two worst teams in the country FDU and Bryant to get to 15 wins. They lost by 40 to Wagner.

So why the hell was he named coach of the year?

I follow St. Francis closely and have been to 4 of their games this year, including tonight. Braica has done a phenomenal job with what they have. They lost their 2 best players from last season to graduation, then early in this year lost their best player to injury. They struggled early on because they are so young but hung in there against some tough teams (took Seton hall to overtime). They were picked 11th in the conference in the preseason and finished 4th. They played 3 tough games against LIU and Wagner and beat Robert Morris on the road which is very tough to do. It's tough to win at a school with no facilities, campus, dorms, etc. but Braica has done a great job.

he learned how to schmooz under the tutelege of norm roberts. 15-15 is a mediocre record in a mediocre conference. he's found his niche...good for him.

on the other hand, hurley should demand an investigation. his wagner team will probably be in the ncaa tournament this year. he'll be coaching at a high major school someday. will braica?

Newsman I truly believe Coach Braica is right where he wants to be and is exceptionally comfortable at St. Francis. I continue to wish him all the best.

Congratulations to Coach Braica. Without commenting on his abilities whtsoever, or what he acocmplished here, I'd always remark that during games, NR would have zero interaction with his staff. I felt that being a poor game coach had he used his assistants as advisors during games, or if they interacted with players more during play that we'd be better off.

Good to see his star rising. After 6 years on a sunken ship it's good that someone with ability gets a shot and does well.

Beast and LJSA you guys are dead on concerning Norm's stubborness as head coach. Casey pushed for a shorter rotation in Norm's last 2 years, but Norm did not listen(until the bitter end).

Norm's insecurity and stuborness cost the program many games.

Great personality and very liked by his colleagues? I'm just saying it's not like he won 20+ games. He finished .500 after being spotted three games against NJIT, Bryant, and FDU.

I know what you were trying to say.
I was legitimately wondering why he got it after you explained the resume.

It helps that the top three teams, LIU, Wagner, and Robert Morris, are nearly indistinguishable in terms of record--all between 23-26 wins a piece. After those three teams, it is a cluster-f of mediocrity before the bottom of the bottom of college basketball.

Braica is liked by nearly everyone...the Hurleys are not. If I had to guess, the safe pick in that conference was Braica, and it was probably 3 total votes that got him the award...with the top 3 coaches getting two a piece and a few others going to teams like Quinnipiac (who just beat St. Francis) and had three more wins overall.

15-15 is nothing to celebrate, but I do think Braica is a very lucky man in the perfect situation.

I can't comment on NR's interaction with his staff apart from games. Thanks for that insight - it is consistent with what we know about NR.

Coach C. never hesitated to hand the clipboard to Brian Mahoney during timeouts. A good manager defers to the talents of his subordinates. Often times Roberts would be staring at the court, arms folded, and pretending he was deeply involved in tactical coaching when he didn't have a clue what was going on. I'd think, "hey you ass, if you can't do it, get some opnions from your assistants."

The above train of thought was verified by a top coach who told a friend of mine after playing NR's team. "It was amazing. I never saw anything like it. Usually you do something - press, go with a big front line, and the other coach makes a commensurate move. This guy does nothing but watch."
