Bob Shepherd Clip

Sheppard's Wiki page claims that he graduated from a St. John's Prep in Bed Stuy. The only St. John's Prep I've ever heard of is in Astoria, the old Mater Christi. Yet Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood(Queens) lists him among their alum. One of them is wrong.

I believe he lived in Richmond Hill at one point and taught at John Adams High School in Ozone Park, but could be mistaken. I'm not a Yankees fan, but that voice was a national treasure.

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Shepherd as my Speech 1 Professor at St. John’s. We had a lot of fun in his class as I remember. He was always giving pointers during his instruction. His favorite phrase was “we must learn to speak phonetically correct”.
I am not a Yankee or a Giants fan but he also (of course) did the PA at Alumni Hall. Always sat in the class in a suit. The term I would use is old school gentleman who liked to laugh and have a good time but when it was time to work, in his case teach, he was all business. I was very fortunate to have him as a teacher. I still use his guidance for speech giving for my presentations at work.

St. John's Preparatory School was established in 1870 by the Vincentian Fathers as the Preparatory Department of St. John's College (later University).[1] In 1955 the College moved out to its new campus and the prep school further expanded, taking over its former buildings. Through the early 1970s, St. John's Prep was all-boys, located in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn on Lewis and Hart Avenues. The school closed temporarily in 1972 but reopened in 1981 on Crescent Street in Astoria.

Mater Christi Diocesan High School was founded in 1961 through the efforts of Brian J. McEntegart, then the Bishop of Brooklyn. It had separate boys' and girls' divisions which were staffed by De La Salle Brothers and Sisters of Mercy respectively. In 1974 the divisions were merged to become a fully coeducational school. In 1977 it was turned over to a community-based board of trustees and became known as Mater Christi Catholic High School. The school motto was "Ut vitam habeant et abundantius " from the Gospel of John 10:10, "That They May Have Life More Abundantly." In 1980 the school announced an affiliation with St. John's University. St. John's Prep's charter was re-issued and Mater Christi became St. John's Preparatory School.[2]

St. John's Prep is affiliated with St. John's University, but it is run by an independent board of trustees, which includes members of the Vincentian community. The faculty and the administration are laypeople and also religious sisters and brothers from several Catholic religious orders, including most notably, the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of St. Joseph. The Sisters of Joseph also helped start the Holy Family Catholic Academy in Fresh Meadows, New York.

I met Bob Shepherd and John Wooden at the McDonalds All American game at Alumni Hall in the 1990s - and the St.Johns recruits playing in that game were.......???????
(Answer below)

I hope Coach Anderson and AD Cragg know ( or learn ) the history of our program - and celebrate all of our players when they return for a game - I noted the story of my lovely conversation with Jeff Allen one of our twin towers - along w Bill Wennington. No one announced that Jeff was at the game - imo missed opportunity for our “ family “

All the best

Felipe Lopez and Zendon Hamilton

I met him at a St. John’s club football game. He was doing the PA announcing and I was covering for the Torch. A very humble man. “The Voice of God.”
