(Feb. 14, 2023) – St. John’s Athletics Hall of Famer and former men’s basketball standout Bill Schaeffer will be honored on Saturday, Feb. 18 during the Red Storm’s contest with No. 18/19 Creighton in this year’s St. John’s Basketball Legends Series Bobblehead Giveaway. Schaeffer, who currently serves as the Director of Development for the Peter J. Tobin College of Business, enjoyed a decorated playing career with the Johnnies, before earning his bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1973.

Schaeffer scored 1,484 points in 79 career appearances from 1970-73, a total that still ranks 15th on the St. John’s all-time scoring list. In addition, the former Johnnie star shot a career 56.0 percent from the field, which ranks fourth in program history, while grabbing 622 career rebounds, placing him 29th on that all-time list. Playing under head coach Frank Mulzoff, Schaeffer helped lead St. John’s to a 56-27 record in his three varsity seasons.

And he played in an era when SJU had a freshman BB program, and freshmen were not eligible for varsity sports. And no 3-point line.

Billy played when players took "real" majors. Billy majored in accounting and was a CPA with one of the Big 8 along with another great former player/accounting major from the late 1960's who also wears a Knick's NBA championship ring from 1970 and was a partner in another of the Big 8 firms.
