Billy Goodwin Article

Tough guy and player. Really liked the Mullin, Russell, Goodwin teams. Was also really nice to a 13 year old USBL ball ball who wouldn't shut up.
Had that SI cover framed and still have somewhere in my attic.

In a game in Mullin's Soph year Kevin Williams fought Ewing and Goodwin beat up David Wingate. No one was thrown out. The good old days of the BE

Kevin WIlliams never fought Ewing to my recollection. The watershed moment was after Ewing threw an intimidating vicious elbow under the basket and Williams stood alone at halfcourt in front of a packed to the rafters MSG and waved his arms at Ewing slowly and sardonically to invite Ewing to try to take a piece out of him if he could. Ewing wanted no part of Williams, for fear of getting tossed or getting his ass kicked. The Garden erupted, and it was at that precise moment fans knew we could compete with Georgetown and not fold under Hoya intimidation.

Goodwin - one of my all time favorite players, and the glue on those teams that perched SJU at the top of the Big East. (and the rim)

Should have to wrote TRIED to fight Ewing. Thought he(Ewing) threw a punch at him not an elbow, but was long time ago and I might be confusing it with his Pearl Washington "fight". During that I game I believe Goodwin hit Wingate with a quick combination.

Game at the Garden, Ewing running across the lane and in traffic KW gave him a shot in the lower abdomen and they had to be separated. That is my recollection.

This is beginning to sound like the classic Japanese film "Rashomon." Herein lies the truth ... or at least how Malcolm Moran reported it:

Players like Williams, Mel Davis, Ron Artest among others are worth so much more than just their athletic ability. They add a toughness that is hard to put a value on but when you watch this team give up one uncontested layup or dunk after another and then read of the possibility of getting the 6 ft 8in, 230 lb transfer from Ark. St. got me thinking a player like him based on next year's roster is more important than Alkins.

Thanks that is more like I remember and I am almost sure Goodwin and Wingate had a fight that game too

I thought Williams took a swing at him but didn't connect.

I recall Williams coming off the top rope with the People's Elbow. Then he drops on top of Ewing for a 3-count, but Wingate entered the ring with a foreign object. And the rest is history!

The most likely one to interfere would be John Thompson. He reminded me of Lou Albano, except less entertaining.
