Big East Roundtable: Part I

I saw it there also and posted it on JJ. I was curious how McDermott can give up his scholarship and become a walk on. I didn't think that was allowed.

It happens. Michael Bradley gave up his ship to Andre Drummond when he committed to UConn. Now did he volunteer to or was "requested" to is a different story but you can do it.

My question though is whether McDermott is really on the hook for the tuition as his dad is the Head Coach. At many University, employees children, if they qualify, can go to the school free or at a steep discount. I know that policy exists at St. John's. Remember Phil Missere's father was a (might still be) a professor at St. Johns. Phil got a ship that was available his last year and the main difference was that with the Ship, he got eat at the training table which he couldn't do as a walk-on.

That's how I got out of St.Johns with no student loans. Dad was already retired so he got a job in the mail room. Didn;t know that you can voluntarily give up your schollie although I forgot about the Drummond deal.

If the school never spent money recruiting him that would be allowed. As the coach's son, I think it's safe to say there wasn't much--if any--recruiting involved.
Between McDermott's pro basketball future (not to mention any coaching/broadcasting after) and his father's salary, there wouldn't be much of a problem paying the Creighton Tuition if he isn't eligible for free tution as the son of a university employee.

Saw this posted on Holy Land of Hoops. Must admit I've never heard of this site. Spoiler Alert: very little discussion about St. John's

We're not even mentioned in that story. I'm usually not surprised when 'experts' overlook our program, but that's absurd. Can't have a conversation about the BE in 2013 without mentioning this team. Time will tell if they fulfill their promise, but there is certainly good reason to compare this team to the best in the conference.

A nice piece from CBSSports.com. "Six of the 10 teams have recruiting classes ranked in the top 25 nationally, and 18 players ranked in the 247 Sports Composite top 125 have pledged to Big East schools." Those are the type of numbers I like to hear

Picked this out of the story. I don't think that Hooper ever scored a point in the Ivy League.

This is an area where Hooper could provide significant help, if the kid from Harvard can continue to drain shots from deep like he did in the Ivy League.
