Big East record in jeopardy

Only the Big East Conference has had 3 members make the Final Four in the same year (1985) Today the Big Ten could equal that mark
with victories by Michigan and Michigan State. Could former Big East member UCONN save the day and the record.
Extremely hard to do with the way brackets are set up and the chance for members to knock each other out.

I'm embarrassed to say that today, I will be rooting for Pukon to win. Even just typing that makes me feel dirty! :pinch:

Well if Michigan wins then my NC game will still be in tact: Florida Vs. Michigan. I can`t root for Yukon.
Hey, records are meant to be broken.

Sorry but that record is sacred. Every moron pundit at ESPN has been waiting years for it to be broken, especially by their beloved
ACC. Only nine members back then for the uninformed looking to expand. 4 made the elite eight. 64 teams chosen.

Who cares about the record, I hope UCONN gets smashed.
+1. That record is 29 years old from a conference that exists only in name at this point. CCNY was once great in college basketball, but times change.

I realize it's popular on this site to trash the Big East, but comparing the league to CCNY in the years following the college hoops betting scandals is over the top. Jay Bilas is sure to use that quote often. It will ring as hollow as all of his predictions. The programs in the Big East are on solid financial footing with programs that have more in common with the early days of Big East hoops than with the mega-conference it became in the last decade. They will invest in good coaches and facilities. They have great alumni bases with strong links to some of the best cities in America. The league is not going away - despite its poor showing in this years tournament.

The best part of the record is the that it was set by three program that stayed loyal to the league.

SJU and who ever plays against YUKON

I understand all the vitriol by SJU fans against UCONN, but it isn't a 2 way street as far as I see it. During their prolonged run of excellence, with 1999, 2004, and 2011 championships, the 90s where they won 5 Big East championships and 3 more BETs. Over 24 years they've made the NCAA tournament 19 times, with 5 number one seeds and 6 number two seeds. Except for the Artest years, we have hardly challenged them.

A bunch of years ago, I visited Fenway Park. During that season, the Sox were a 5th place team, and much closer to last place than to first. In New York, the rivalry was barely mentioned. But in the stands in Fenway, I heard a bunch of conversations about the Yankees, which I thought was a little humorous. It's almost like the deep South still having strong disdain for Yankees, as if the Civil War just ended. I've often wondered if Southerners know that Northeasterners are almost completely devoid of similar feelings, to the point of being unaware that such disdain even exists.

I'd love to hate UCONN again, but to do that, we'd have to seriously compete with them for basketball excellence.

Your absolutely right. I have a lot of friends who ended up going to UCONN and St. John's is never mentioned especially as a rival. A lot of UCONN fans have told me that they enjoy watching St. John's and they want us to do good. There's no hatred on their end, with that said I still hate UCONN basketball. Ollie is a great guy though, I used to hook him and his son with sneakers when i worked at Champs and he always through me some extra money.

Having gone to UConn for my undergrad and graduate degree, I can definitely say they don't view us as a rival. It was a bit different when I started there back in 2001, the rivalry was still there a bit (remember that OT win against them at the Garden in 2002?). However, it rapidly faded over the years on their end as we became irrelevant and they continued to be a national power.

Was that supposed to be a sentence? Who cares if you see it as a two way street? Most SJU fans hate UConn and for good reason. It means nothing if UConn fans hate us. You think that Red Sox fans caring about a rivalry even though they are having a bad year is humorous? I guess you don't understand what a rivalry is. The Civil War analogy is really out there but I guess you wanted to use the word Yankee in different ways.

Please stop it. If you are wounded because you wrote an incredibly incomprehensible run on sentence, then don't try to turn it around. I've published in peer review journals (go google it), and I don't believe many other have difficulty understanding what I write.

So, for your edification, here is the Miriam Webster definition of a rival:

1ri·val noun \ˈrī-vəl\

: a person or thing that tries to defeat or be more successful than another

: something or someone that is as good or almost as

I think UCONN has proven over 20 years that they are a more successful program (definition number 1). If you use definition number 2, SJU is in no way as good as, or almost as good as UCONN. You can think we are competing with them still, but we couldn't even bring as many fans to our own home court as they did to MSG when they played us. As they say in tennis, game, set, and match.

I'd love to be competing in their realm. Isn't what all these "Fire Lavin" posts are all about? To be rivals again with a UCONN, Syracuse, Louisville, Duke? So, make up your mind. IF we are rivals in your head, then you think we are as good as.

I googled Beast of the East peer review journals but I couldn't find anything :p . The whole point was nobody ever called SJU-UConn a rivalry. You responded to people who simply said they hate UConn and always root against Yukon and you did so for no apparent reason except for people to see your eloquent prose. You were the only person in this thread that used the word rivalry and you mentioned it regarding the Red Sox and Yankees. You can throw in definitions all day long but if you think that Red Sox- Yankees is not a rivalry I don't think many will agree with you. I never said SJU-UConn was a rivalry and I didn't see anyone else say it either, we all just stated that we can't stand Yukon. If you are going to criticize others you should make sure you are always right no matter how high and mighty you think you are. Have a good day.

Well thank you for the compliment on eloquent prose. I posted it because I don't quite understand the fascination with UCONN, except to say they've kicked our butt for years at the Garden, and we used to compete with them but no longer do. MattB be responded and used the word rivalry. What I had said was that when the Red Sox weren't competing against the Yankees a bunch of years ago, no one in NY seriously spoke about them - they were as irrelevant as our program during the Norm years.

You're ire was raised because I questioned what the heck you were trying to say in your run on sentence, that's all.

St. John's has played 106 seasons of basketball. Yukon has played 110. St. John's in less seasons of basketball is ranked #7 in all time wins. Uconn in more seasons of basketball is ranked 27th in all time wins. St. John's first played yukon in 1951. From Feb 1981 through 1989 St. John's was undefeated against Yukon 17-0. From 1994 through 2010, Yukon dominated the, for lack of a better word, Rivalry. This included a 7-0 stretch from 1994-1996 and a 9-0 stretch in 2003-2010. By decade:

[ul]St. John's | Yukon
[li]50's 1-0[/li]
[li]60's 0-0[/li]
[li]70's 0-1[/li]
[li]80's 18-2[/li]
[li]90's 8-13[/li]
[li]00's 5-10[/li]
[li]10's 3-2[/li]
[/ul]

Overall: St. John's leads the "rivalry" including an edge in the most recent games. through the 1980s yukon would not even have been a mild consideration for one of the top teams all time - a time in which St. John's was ranked #4 in all time wins and historically St. John's had big wins and achievements that the NCAA has overshadowed where it once was upstart. Who's to say where the NCAA will be in a decade?
When bball was a genuinely amateur college sport there was no comparison. When big money and political weight went into hiring players and shady deals between state gov't (taxpayer money) and Calhoun, Yukon was masterful.
Considering the coaching drama of the 90s/00s, it is amazing that St. John's won 13 games against what was definitely one of the most dominant teams of that era.
