How do you rank the coaches of the BE?

School                               Current Coach

Shaka Smart has to be higher than 7th, he’s been to a Final Four as a head coach. No other coach on that list has except for obviously Jay Wright.

1) Wright
2) Smart
3) McDermott
4) Cooley
5) CMA
6) Willard
7) Hurley
8) Steele
9) Jordan
10) Ewing
11) Stubblefield

3 - 8 is basically a toss up depending on the criteria you want to use. CMA has a lot of wins as a coach, McDermott and Cooley extremely solid strategists, Willard and Hurley not as much experience but have shown the ability to recruit very well, Steele, not a lot of years as a head coach but has an excellent team this season and seems very capable. 3 - 8 simply a matter of opinion. Shaka has to second just based on a his final four appearance. He recruited really well at Texas had some guys leave early which hindered his ability to move the program forward to the point the powers that ne at Texas wanted but he wasn’t bad there.

1) Wright
2) McDermott
3) Cooley
4) Hurley
5) Willard
6) Smart
7) Steele
8:  CMA
9) Ewing
10) Jordan
11) Stubb(to soon to judge)

Fascinating question. To me it is Jay Wright and everyone else. I don't agree that Shaka Smart gets to 2nd because he made a final four. Does anyone here really think Porter Moser is better than all of our coaches but Jay because he made a Final Four?

Here is my list as of today but could easily change by year end except for the top spot:

1. Wright
2. McDermott
3. Willard
4. Cooley
5. Hurley
6. Anderson
7. Smart
8. Steele
9. Ewing
10. Jordan
11. Stubblefield (Inc.)

3&4 and 6&7 could be flipped

Shaka Smart has averaged 21 wins a year as a coach over his 13 seasons and has shown the ability to recruit at an extremely high level at Texas and made it to a Final Four at a school that doesn’t have nearly the facilities or resources that any of the Big East schools have except for our currently inept program. Porter Moser did the same and has 310 wins as college coach. He’s currently 10-2 in his first season at Oklahoma about to become 11-2. Was Hurley able to accomplish at Rhode Island what Smart accomplished at VCU or what Moser accomplished at Loyola, nope. I can’t put Hurley ahead of Smart. Was Willard able to achieve those heights when he was at a smaller school? Nope. Willard had one good season at Iona.

FWIW, I actually the strategy part of the game is Cooley's weakness.  His strengths are recruiting, and the fact that he's a master motivator, which is why Providence is always so dangerous when expectations are low (it's when expectations are high that they tend to have problems).

There's obviously a number of different criteria that can be used to rate the coaches. To me it's pretty simply; I ranked the coaches from 1-11 in order of who I would hire to coach my team if given a choice of all 11.

Using Monte's criteria...here's how I'd go.

1. Wright
2. McDermott
3. Hurley
4. Smart
5. Willard
6. Cooley
7. Anderson
8. Steele
9. Ewing
10. Jordan
11. Stubblefield (tbd)

The fact that shaka smart didnt foul up 3 w/ 3 seconds to go in yesterdays game was just an awful coaching decision.  Hes nothing special and lost the game yesterday w/ his inexcusably bad late game coaching.

Cost the Eagles the Game .  Creighton is always a tough out .   This is pretty much a Re-tooled team that is tough to beat , as always .
