First place voets were: 5 for Marquette, 2 for Georgetown, 1 for Creighton, and 1 for St. John's (well, we know it wasen't Rick Pitino who voted for us).

D'Angelo on the preseason first team, along with Markel Starks, Devonte Gardner, Bryce Cotten, and Semaj Christian (I'm guessing McDermott too, since he was voted Player of the Year).

Obekpa was preseason honerable mention, alongside Kadeem Batts (they were the only 2 players named).

Jordan preseason Rookie of the Year.

St. John's has four players honored in all-conference teams -- Jordan, Harrison, Sampson, Obekpa -- most of any team here. #sjubb

Of course, those number don't add up to 10. The official sheet is on the St. John's twitter page. It's actually 2 first-place votes for St. John's. Only 5 total points behind Creighton in the voting.

You're correct....

Johnnies picked fifth in the @bigeastconf. Five votes off third and claiming two first-place votes. #SJUBB #BIGEAST pic.twitter.com/qrPO65TH78

All pre-season jabber. One key injury or if the wheels fall off, we could drop behind a Providence or Xavier for 6th or 7th. Far more likely though is that we will challenge near the top, with a fair shot at finishing 1-2 or 3.

“@NYPost_Brazille: St. John's players were not happy to be picked fifth. D'Angelo Harrison plans to write the No. 5 in locker room later. #sjubb”

Good! Find things to motivate the squad.

STEVE LAVIN, St. John’s:

On the new Big East’s NCAA Tournament potential: “It’s analgous to the Pac-10 from the strong years (in the 1990s and early 2000s). When you look at the quality of the coaching, 10 teams being the number, having a champion based on a home-and-home schedule, you have that balance. This is old school.”

“It sets up very nicely for the Big East on a regular basis to have seven or eight teams in the hunt for the NCAA Tournament. You can get five or six teams in consistently. There was a stretch (in the Pac-10) when a down year was four, a good year was six and a number of years there were five. Half the league was going to the NCAA Tournament, and not only did they get in, they were making runs. The Big East should be able to do the same thing with the quality of the coaching, the recruiting centers the schools are in, operating (our tournament) out of the Garden and the TV exposure.”

On the importance of the non-conference schedule, given the loss of RPI-building games against Syracuse, UConn and Louisville: “I think we’re going to learn as we go. When you look at the strength of schedule in the more recent RPI, you some times need Alan Greenspan to figure out the formula for success. I think this conference, the coaches and the league office have a strong sense of what it’s going to take, but we’re going to find out more as we go through these next couple of years, and that will help us moving forward in terms of how we schedule.”

“There needs to be a balance of enough high-level games out of conference, but we also have to be careful not to over-schedule because we’ll beat each other up in league play.”

Creighton's coach said that St. John's at number 5 scares me b/c of how incredibly talented they are

I can't remember the last time I have been this excited to see my team play. 23 more days!

Time to prove it on the court now. I'm not worried about anybody besides us. We have all the talent. Truth be told, we go as far as our defense and rebounding take us. Need to take defense personally. We have enough offensive talent and now some balance of frontcourt and backcourt players. Need to limit other teams in what they do well, which is the key. These kids should be dissatisfied with number 5 ranking. We are easily a top 3 team, but need to prove it now.

For me, it was when Felipe was coming in as a freshman. That's how long it's been for me that I was looking forward to a season this much.

What a great guy Felipe was. Unfortunately, he never lived up to the comparisons to Michael Jordan.

Completely agree with the notion that they "need to take defense personally." In the past, the team had been so short handed that they were doomed if one of the guys got in foul trouble. There is so much depth on this team that players can be aggressive out on the court. Take chances on steals and don't be afraid to give a hard foul. Set the tempo and show teams that you aren't going to be outmuscled on the court.
