The way this season is going I think that the makeup of the tournament will include a lot more teams . I know that there is talk of establishing a bubble in Indianapolis but I really dont think  thiswill be part of the final framework . So many teams are off such horrible starts UK , NC, Duke  and the possibility that many teams will end up playing a greatly reduced number of games , I cant see that the same system of brackets will be kept . There has been talk  in recent years of enlarging the the pool and I think this is a good reason for that to happen . The NCAA allowed Ohio State  to be included in the Football final 4 even though they had not played the required number of games so it looks like nothing is etched in stone .,

The NCAA does not have a minimum game requirement to be eligible for the FBS College Football Playoff so they did not change a non-existent requirement.  The Big Ten changed its requirment that they put in place earlier this year that teams must play six out of eight scheduled games to be eligible for their conference championship game.  By doing so, it gave Ohio State (who only was able to play five) a better chance at making the FBS playoffs if they won the conference championship despite having played fewer games than other programs in contention for a playoff sport.

There are 351 NCAA Division I basketball teams. The simplest approach is to come up with some type of power ranking (W/L, SOS, RPI).  The top 161 teams get a bye.  Teams 162-351 play in the first round, a total of 95 games.  After this round, there will be 256 teams remaining, which is one additional weekend of the tournament.

On the other hand, there are 32 conferences, so maybe you have everyone play a conference tournament, and the winner advances to the NCAA tournament.

Agree that this is an opportunity to have "true" open national tournament with all teams eleigible (if Covid Free).  I felt this was something that could be done prior to the season beginning (as I thought holding start until January).  The tournament could actully be held in May/June.  They could use 16 "pods", consisting of campuses with large amount of dorm space as students will not be at them.  The sweet 16 could go to one pod for the remaining games over 2 weeks.--Just a thought.

Adding just 1 additional round by expanding the field to 128 vastly increases at large bids to include all contenders safely.  Not sure it is logistically possible though.  In power conferences just about all teams could make it. And the n.i.t. could be eliminated.

If it is not possible for Big East basketball, an 11 team conference, to conduct a coherent league schedule as a result of the Covid pandemic I do not know how a 64 team tournament can be conducted in a functional manner.

Because spring 2021 is hopefully a lot different than fall 2020.

I agree with you, Otis, but the NCAA is desperate to run the tournament this year because of the TV revenue and will do anything humanly possible to see that it takes place.

With MLB trying out several new ideas this year (most of which I didn't like), maybe this is the time to change the way the NCAA tournament is run for this year and see how it goes. Maybe they will stumble upon some good ideas to utilize in future years.

I look at any college basketball we get this 2020-2021 season (regular or post season) as a welcome bonus/distraction for fans and players/coaches. Needless to say any postseason tourney organization is going to by necessity be fluid and subject to change. So long as health of players is the primary planning consideration, I'm good with whatever they come up with.

Thinking about it, the NCAA has to be prepared to have forfeits when a team in the tourney has to cancel because of Covid.   They won't be able to delay games the way the tournament is structured.
