Best STJ NBA/ABA Players

There's a basketball Facebook page I follow that (among other things) is putting together the best NBA/ABA alums from different schools.

This is based strictly on what they did in the pros, not college.

They haven't done a St. John's version yet. So here is mine in the quiet dog days of summer.

C: Billy Paultz
F: Chris Mullin
F: Ron Artest
G: Kevin Loughery
G: Dick McGuire

What's yours?

Agree with your frontcourt (although Weddington/Paultz is close) but I'd take Mark Jackson over Loughery for sure.

as to center. Leroy Ellis had a very good NBA career. Check out basketball reference stats and you will note not close.
You are 100% right BR. Not sure how I missed that. Leroy was at SJU a year or two before I started following them (like Loughery) but remember his NBA career which stats wise was better than either the Whopper or Big Bill.

If it’s to win an actual game:

Barkley
Postell
Mullin
Artest
Williams

If it’s to honor the best achievements…I haven’t been a fan long enough to do that justice.

Scratch Barkley and Postell. Add Mark Jackson and Walter Berry.
For us older fans we would also consider Sonny Dove, John Warren, Leroy Ellis, Bill Paultz, Bill Schaeffer, and Kevin Loughery (many forget he played for us).
Also we should never forget Malik Sealy and to a slightly lesser extent Charles Minlend.
I think it would be fun in 10 year increments. Great memories for sure.

Thread is only looking at those who had great pro careers, not necessarily what they did at STJ.

Didn't Bill Wennington win a few NBA championships?

I believe the instructions were to name the SJU MBB Alumni who made a slash as a Pro.

Sorry, but Walter, Sonny, Billy S., Johnny W., Barkley, and Postell did not. If Mel D. had not hurt his knee, he might have done wonders in the NBA.

My SJU players who made an impact while in the NBA and played there for more than five years are:
  • Centers - in this order- Leroy, the Whopper, and Bill W.
  • True Guards- in this order- Mullin, McGuire, Jackson, Kevin L.
  • Forwards- Ron A., Sealy (but cut short) I could not think of too many Forwards who made so noise in the NBA.
As previously stated, it is difficult to select players over several decades.

F or C Jayson Williams was an elite rebounder for a few years.

Agree with this except Mullin played small forward in the NBA, did not play any guard. If you put him at forward kind of pushes Malik into second 5 guys based on NBA careers
