I recently met a great guy who I believe was Torch Sports Editor in early 1970s. He told me this story.
He decided to run an imaginative April Fool's article in the Torch in 1970. The title "Coach Carnesecca to leave St. John's to coach the Nets."
When the well-written story ran, he pulled a few legs. Everyone thought it was hilarious. The editor couldn't understand when Looie contacted him and was livid. Carnesecca really gave it to the kid.
The kid was bewildered. How could coach be such a poor sport? What had he done that was so wrong? For weeks this bothered the kid. Until June 19th.

Great story. Not sure where the Torch archives are, but I guess you could look it up, as Casey Stengel liked to say.
Note: the guy still has season tix and is a great supporter of the athletic department.
