Basketball Is a Team Game

I have started to DVR the past few games for a couple of reasons. First, there are times when the game gets close, I find a reason to change the channel or go to the bathroom, lol. The second reason is that when I watch a game that I already know the outcome of, I can pay attention to other things like player interactions.

During the Marquette game, I was able to see McGriff and Posh talking while Posh was getting a breather. McGriff was smiling and encouraging Posh, ths is what a team does. At the end of the game, Roberts and Moore, who play the same position, were hugging each other.

During the Villanova game, Posh and Julian executed a fast break that you only see in practice. Coming down the court, passing to each other without the ball touching the floor, "teamwork".

Coach Anderson and staff have molded a group of individuals into a team. Julian and Posh may be the faces of the program, but everyone on this team has a role and appear to have accepted it. Different players step up each game, and as Monte reminded me yesterday, sometimes each half. Cole played well against Villanova and then yesterday Dunn was brilliant against Providence. What some don't realize is that Dunn was never a true point guard. In high school, him and Shamorie were the primary scorers at Jefferson, At St. Francis, Dunn was counted on to score because that is what is needed of him. The staff needs to be commended for his transformation into the player he is now. One thing he said after yesterday's game really sticks out, our shots were falling in the first half and we got away from our defensive mindset. The team with adjustments from the coach, played mush better defense in the second half'.

Wusu, Moore, Earlington, Roberts have all had their moments. How about Williams, he misses a few games due to a back injury. When he returns against Nova, he does not play tentative, he puts it all out there with a powerful dunk energizing his teammates. Yesterday, he hits two 3 pointers and plays good defense.

Coach Anderson has given us a team that we can all root for and be proud of because they play with and for each other. That he has been able to accomplish this in less thaaaan two years says a lot about him as a coach. In watching replays of the games, I have noticed that after the game Coach will spend some time talking to, and putting his arm around players before leaving the court. You can tell that he sincerely cares about his players. One of the most important lessons I learned during my 30 year counseling career was "before a patient cares about how much you know, he or she must know that you care". In this instance, you can substitute player for patient.

Enjoy the Super Bowl, then on to Hinkle Fieldhouse and Butler.

Spot on Panther!  I also noticed that quote from Dunn.  Any team can identify and make adjustments between games.  The good ones can do it within a game.  The great ones can do it in a timeout without waiting for halftime. We are good and hopeful can progress toward great.  But, no one can deny that with this group the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.  All the credit goes to the staff (for recognizing strengths and weaknesses, installing a gameplan and molding and mentoring the group) and the players
(for buy-in, acceptance of roles and tremendous hard work).  When it starts to look easy, it means that a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into working to make it look easy.

Post of the day . Drop the mic

Watching this team reminds me of the theme of the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.  "We are Family" is an appropriate song for this year's team.  Poppa CMA and Momma Mrs. CMA guiding and loving the kids in their charge.  This team is a family.

Great post Panther!  Weatherman, you said the quote I have been thinking for quite a few games now. This TEAM is greater than the sum of its parts.  Enjoy the day guys.

100% Panther. The beauty of becoming a team is that it translates on the court.

Suddenly we see everyone touching the ball almost every possession. Vital because even though we are playing as a "team" you still need Posh and Julian to touch the ball each time down. Whether they end up taking the shot is irrelevant. We need to keep opposing D honest and that's the best way to do so. It opens things up for the other guys and it's shown in recent weeks with important contributions from Wusu, Marcellus, Moore etc.

That Posh/Julian exchange against Nova really stood out to me too. Straight out of a 1980's tutorial vid you'd pop into a VCR on how to run a fast-break. That's old school ball right there!

We aren't over-helping on defense and leaving wide-open shooters. Instead our half court defense is much more connected and guys are consistently where they should be (makes up for our lake of size and penchant for allowing too many 3's the last decade lol).

Credit goes to coach and his staff as well as these young players for making such a drastic transformation. We're on to Butler!

You've recently submitted a few excellent posts including this one! (and Sirvoo's  above)
Coach Anderson does care. and imo he is thrilled inside to see how the choices he has made have been paying off: taking the job, taking this high pressure NYC job (without New York roots)  assembling his staff, learning the players he inherited, recruiting and helping the new recruits adjust to not only D1 but to this particular St. John D1 team.
Her is driven, motivated, experineced and knows both Xs Os, recruiting AND just being himself - a nice, father figure inspiring man.
Oh and yes he has a knack to use his assistant coaches wisely as he does his players - to maximize their opportunities for success.
There will be Ls in games that we will frown upon and recruits we miss out on nad become frustrated over
HOWEVER - I sense Mike Anderson will bring more positives than not. And in a mere 20+ months since April 2019, we are already seeing his impact! And  the impact of our AD Cragg and likely pleasant impact of our new sports friendly President.
Looking very good from what I - as a mere fan - can see.
Blessings.

PS
I would be more than pleased to have a kid play for him - I bet most parents of the 2020-21 kids are thrilled. Mr. Williams has a warm heart and smile watching his son excel, cope with the back injury, moving on.

CMA has preached humility, and judging by the postgame pressers for each of the last 6 games, the players have bought in.
Yesterday for example, the reporters asked Dunn about the teams recent success and he responds, "As coach says, a pat on back will set you back." Tremendous.

Thanks Knight AND I (we) would not at all be happy with aa different coach such as Rick Pitino coaching our team even if they were undefeated. Mike Anderson is a decent and inspirational man - eacy to root for - who cares about the players and about the school. I'll take him and whatever record he produces - take him over a coach with less integrity.
Go Red Storm - It's time to appear and make noise ont he Div 1 map!!! (like the 'old' days)

Panther2, very insightful post; Paultzman posted a tweet from CMA a couple of days ago where Coach alluded to leadership in place and ownership happening! That reality is very much reflected in your post.

panther great post and great thread.

loved the back and forth passes down the floor with Julian nad Posh, I thought I was back in high school.

Really great post and observations.

One of the things I noticed about that Posh/Champagnie fast break we all liked so much in the Villanova game...That was Champagnie's first bucket of the night. He couldn't get anything to go down before that. It was also a 3 on 1 and Dunn was available as well but the ball never went to him even though Posh was able to see both of them. I really do think he kept giving the ball back to Champagnie immediately because the pg in Posh's brain was saying "You've gotta get this one, we need to get our scorer going."

That Posh/Champagnie fast break was textbook, and should be an example of all "How To" videos.

Great idea to record the Game, Panther . You are right , you can focus closer on player decisions and performance . Kind of what the Coaches do . Our BE Broadcasts this year hsve had several different pairings of Announcers . Some have done more than 1 game . The oberservation they all make , is " how Does Alexander get so many baskets down low among the Trees and how often he either steals the ball from the bigs or gets the put back on misses, his own or others . " He doesn't have a off button and when he's on the Court it's 100 mph all the time .. I would like to see Williams get more minutes when he's fully 100 percent injury wise and condition wise . I prefer him handling the Ball when Posh is getting a breather or setting up Court instead of Dunn. Dunn runs the Clock down and isn't looking to pass to others , and he makes poor decisions when they double team him . He's valuable off the. ball as a Scorer going to the Hole , rather than calling his own number . I would have thought Coach A sees that too ?  Williams will need to play more , once he's healthy .  He has too much Game to not use , if 100 percent .

Monte response in 3, 2, 1...

I say kudos to Torro, as his minutes have gone, he is still being really positive on the bench and has a great attitude, unlike Moore had at the beginning of the year.

That's a life lesson...kids are lucky they have someone like CMA regardless of results...more importantly, they recognize it

I loved hearing our bench continually yelling "defense" throughout the game
Also appreciate seeing Mrs CMA showing the team love after the game with fist bumps
It's clear that CMA has created a family atmosphere - one for all and all for one!!
I'm so happy that he is guiding the ship at St John's - great coach and role model

Interesting talk about team play.  SJU just took first place in the Big East in scoring offense. I'm not sure I've ever seen that from a SJU team.

Panther, great post and very astute observations. For the first time in a while, I feel like this is a group of young men that all are so easy to root for. And so enjoyable to watch them play. And as you say, CMA has had such a tremendous influence on our guys and is a major, if not THE major, reason why this team is the way it is.
