Basketball IQ

I know we are down in talent, and this is a makeshift roster. We were all expecting (and now experiencing) a terrible year.

However, what frightens me the most is a complete lack of basketball IQ. Our players seem to have no concept of the game of basketball. They don't understand what is a good shot and what is not. They don't understand who the open man should be after driving to the basket and the defense collapses.

Simply stated, they are just not smart basketball players. And with the staff that we have, that should never be the case.

Thanks for stating the obvious Jumbo! As you stated this is a makeshift roster with some low energy, low skill players.
This is a team that lost to Incarnate Word, NJIT and the Sisters of St. Mary's when we were almost at full strength except for Lovett. As a result the staff will take their lumps this year because they collectively laid an egg in their rush to fill the roster with defective players like Williams, M'ouvika, Johnson and Ellison. On the plus side they signed some very good not ready for prime time players in Mussini, Lovett, Yakwe and Sima. Players like Balamou, Amar and Jones did not play very much for a reason and even knuckle head Lavin saw their limitations. Coaching this group is almost an effort in futility as only 4 players will get any significant playing time next year. I have seen enough of Jones, Ellison and Williams to know they really will not be factors in the Big East. They should look at their options for next year.

Enough of Williams? He played 2 and a half games, in which he probably was never healthy.

Actually, that's my concern about him going forward. Given his history, I wonder if we will ever see him healthy.

That is my concern hence my lack of optimism with him but after the scrimmages and a couple of games I already felt he was not 100 % and looked tentative when it came to contact for a guy 6'8. As for hustle he was slow to get back and looked eerily similar to Obekpa running the court. Owens and Freudenberg will eat up his minutes next year so, like Ellison and Jones, he would be wise to examine his options.

He doesn't have any options. He already burned a redshirt year in JC, so he totally lost a year with this injury (he can apply for a 6th year, but the NCAA won't rule until that time comes). He'll be here next year. After that, he can transfer without penalty, assuming he's on track to graduate.

He can play at any NA IA school without penalty if he cannot get minutes at SJU. He would be fine at Biola. ;)

My point was this.....with as much experience and talent that is on this staff....our players do not seem to have a good understanding of basketball, and are often un-prepared in certain situations. That stuff is not due to lack to talent...that is due to lack of coaching.

Just because we have a novice coach does not equate to lack of coaching. It is completely due to the dearth of talent. There is not one player on this team that would get significant minutes on any other Big East team let alone start which has been the case with players of limited ability like Balamou, Jones, Mouvlika and company. None of the freshmen are ready to contribute significant offense yet and they are behind the curve on defense because, well, they are freshmen.

I believe ones IQ is related to the age the test is administered. That makes it difficult for us as most of the team consists of grad students. When we start bringing in younger players the overall IQ should increase due to the proportionality of the exams metrics.

Oooohhhhhhh....Sorry I didn't see the basketball part....

Nevermind...
