If I'm not mistaken, 2 of those were coached by the great Buck Freeman.

Right you are !!

He should be in the Basketball HOF.

Here's a great story I was told recently: Jerry Houston had to have a knee operation in the mid-1960's when that was still a big time surgey.

His parents had to work and couldn't be with him when he had the surgery.

Freeman knew his parents couldn't be there with Jerry so he went to the hospital.

Jerry knew Buck, but not well.

Jerry asked him what he was doing there and Buck said "No kid should be by himself when he just had surgery"

It's a shame he is not in the HOF. I read somewhere that he compiled a record of 177-31 (an 851 winning percentage), which is the highest in NCAA history.

When you analyze who is in, and who isn't in the HOF, you realize that it can be such a subjective process. Sometimes, history is overlooked, and men and women who toiled before massive media coverage, when the NIT rivaled or was more important than the NCAA, way before widespread national TV coverage and cable TV. In coaching, as John Wooden maintained, it's possible that the greatest coaches are the guys very few have ever heard of, simply because they didn't have the best players. JSJ's anecdote about Freeman and Houston is a perfect example of a man's greatness that will never show up in a box score or career record. However, knowing men of such character and caring led our program reinforces what a great tradition our university and sports programs has.
