Several technical issues have necessitated two server migrations this summer. As a part of the latest migration this week, I re-enabled private messaging. A lot of notifications got queued up on the new server including a year or more worth of notifications for the private messages and are being sent out to email. The server is doing automated processing (known as cronjob) and because of the massive amount of items to process the number of items processed at a time is throttled and this will probably go on for a few days.
I apologize for this and I am sure it is confusing to get an email about some conversation you are a part of, that may have happened months ago. Each of these email has a link to the conversation/private message and you can click through to it which will include the timeframe for each message in the conversation. That should put it all into perspective.
