Picked up my copy today, had to rip off the cover (Syracuse's Trevor Cooney) some notable points from the issue:

In the "10 Things To Watch This Year in College Basketball" section, the number 5 thing was "Can Chris Mullin Save St. John's Basketball"

In the "Big Time Hires" section, Chris Mullin was given a B-

In the "Coaches on the Hot Seat" - Kevin Willard

In the NCAA Field of 64-Villanova, Xavier, Butler, Georgetown & Providence

IN the NIT Field - Creighton, Marquette, & Seton Hall

Projected Big East finish:

1 Villanova
2 Butler
3 Xavier
4 Georgetown
5 Providence
6 Marquette
7 Creighton
8 Seton Hall
9 DePaul
10 St. John's

Player of the Year - Kris Dunn
Recruiting Class, number one was Marquette, St. John's was number 4.

I am so confident that we don't finish last that I will never post again if we do. And I have flaky friends and my wife hates me. I need this site badly.

I'm so confident that we don't finish last, that I won't waste my money on that magazine this year. Also, living in upstate New York, I have to always deal with seeing that SU garbage on the cover of all such basketball magazines.

I'll go on record as well saying I also don't believe we will finish last. That said, I don't blame the prognosticators that pick us to finish at the bottom. From their perspective we have an unproven coach, with unproven players, and its up to this year's crew to prove them wrong. I feel confident that Mullin and our guys will be up to the task.

Yeah, I'm thinking that we will be better than people think, and will pull off a few surprises. But, I too can see why others may be skeptical for now.

Transitional year. Sometimes as fans we optimize our outlook & forget other BE teams get better. Suck it up this season, enjoy progress of young players & look forward to being competitive next year. That is only fair to the new staff in my opinion.

The problem, Paultz, is that you think rationally
The question is, how many St John's fans are rational?
Having been on this site for many years, not too many IMO
If we don't do well this year, many knuckleheads will be bitching
Unfortunately, you can count on that!!

Look for Marquette to make that jump and make the tournament this year, and then realize that's us next year.

IMO, thinking that we wont finish in last place is not irrational. I don't see any posters predicting we will finish on the top of the BE. We have a nice core w depth ,albeit inexperienced

When I first became a Johnny fan I was always optimistic about their success, even during the days of Roberts team. One thing I do know is I will enjoy this years group regardless of their win - loss record. I'm sure the future will be exciting and successful. And I know I will be proud of St. John's because Mullln and staff will not let us down. Optimistic - you bet.

Yeah you and Otis have it tough in that aspect.

Seton Hall to me is a major wildcard in the BE. Carrington and Delgado had outstanding freshman seasons, Rodriguez was solid. If Whitehead can start delivering the goods and if they can get the chemistry issues settled, then I see them finishing much better then 8.

As for us, if we can roll out a coherent offense, as opposed to street ball, and be competitve in most games, I'll be happy. Any thing on top of that will be a bonus.

I agree with Willard being on the hot seat. Looks like he couldn't offer more coaching jobs to land recruits. Cant wait till he is gone. Unfortunately I think they have some players that may save his job. Its only a matter of time before he implodes imo

So Move!
Oh no wait!!
You're guarding the SJU northern flank
ala Chamberlane at Gettysburg
Keep up the arduous campaign brother!
You're doing us a great service,
Hold the line until Chris & Co surpass the Orange in Ws and blue chips
It'll happen
The Orange will become the orange

all the best

Thanks Jack!
We have every reason to be optimistic, excited and exuberant "even" (heavens to Merca-triod)
This has been said in many varieties and fashions and languages:
Chris Mullin has been a joy, hard working, highly talented winner from grade school through the Dream and NBA - I'll take our chances on any court and in any living room. We will get our Ws and blue chips. Chris did not come here to lose. And he won't!!

all the best

The Orange Confederacy will fall. Even now their "General" is showing cracks in his armor.

Two things ( among many)
1. The Union Forever (Civil War song) and
2. Ws are - imo - irrelevant this year - we can savor the wondrous direction SJU is headed under the grand, talented, motivated, well- connected staff!
I'll take 0-30 this year. I'm thinking long term. I'm thinking back to the future. Back to the big time where we have always belonged!
:)

SSG, Don't give up the ship just yet. I bet we surprise a lot of the critics. :)

I don't think we will finish last but I don't expect us to finish in the top half of the conference either. Just too much change, too many young players etc.

However, I do have three goals I would like to see Coach and staff make happen:

1- Coach Mullin must begin to install what he wants the St. John's brand to be. Whatever the style is I believe he will need it to sell to recruits. Coach needs to identify his vision and make sure it translates on the floor. I believe kids in and out of the program will buy-in.
2- Hopefully, we are the hard working team that no one wants to play. I know he has talked about conditioning and implementing that mindset (best conditioned team) would be a great start.
3- We need a little more accountability. No more acceptance of bad shots and missed defensive assignments. You want to play, you tow the line. Something tells me Chris and staff will and should demand this.

I am looking forward to the season.
