Could be a trend: Lately ESPN.com's scoreboard has been identifying St. Joseph's as JOES. Very odd.

Yes we are now The Big Red One
lol

During the 1080s when the StJohns men were called the "Redmen" the women's programs were called the "StJohns Express" with the logo being a subway train.

IMO the StJohns brain trust should have kept the name "Express" because the name "Express" referencing an aspect of New York life is better than the name "RedStorm" which no one understands or identifies with even after 2 decades.

In 1989+/- I spoke to Harrington about why StJohns had discarded the well know name "Redmen" and he explained that because some people found the name "Redmen" to be hurtful and/ or insulting that the StJohns brain-trust decided that it was better to stop using the name "Redmen".

Those commercials are dreadful

The worst part is them assembling a small group of students cheering "We are St. john's", as fi they were at a basketball game. It made you wonder if any of those particular kids had ever been to a game. I wondered why they didn't just use footage from an actual game when our student section is loud and animated. I can tell you the answer, likely be 100% correct, but won't discuss it publicly.

Those actually aren't the commercials I was referring to. But those are just as bad almost. The We are Red, We are St. John's campaign has been all over the place. Metro North, LIRR, during Good Morning America. Exposure is great and the mediums they are using are great but the whole thing makes no sense. We are Red? What does Red have to do with SJU besides its sports teams wear the color. I didn't pick a college because it wore Red. Truth be told I hate the color Red.

I have never stopped referring to us as the Redmen, and I never will. After all these years I still do not own anything that says Red Storm on it. It's atrocious.

Whatever happened with the re-branding process that they sent out a survey for? It seemed like we were in store for a complete overhaul of the nickname and logo. Is that still on the table?

I think these ads are part of that process. Not sure when we abandoned STJ in favor of SJU - if it was part of this or not. Obviously we hired a top notch Madison avenue firm that does Superbowl award winning ads.

I'd be happy if we could actually buy a St John's tee-shirt or hat in NYC. While there are plenty of signs proclaiming that we are NY's team if you walk into the Footlocker and Modells a block away from MSG there's no St John's gear to be found.

I remember seeing this discussion on this board several years ago, and i think we lost SJU and became STJ when St. Joe's in Philly took the name and they became SJU. Even though we are the older institution they made claim to the letters.
Actually, when I was a student at SJU, St Joes was a college, not a university, and they were SJC at the time. So them having the SJU letters is rather recent.

You are correct. I seem to recall them trademarking STJ in teh last decade or so.

St. Joes' was simply faster to the draw in registering the internet domain. In the early days of the internet, enterprising geeks registered common corporation names and then tried to sell them back to those corporations. When it was sort of generic - like delta.com for delta airlines, the companies would be more inclined to pay for them. When they were directly names of a well known company, say a Macys.com, those companies generally sued and won if the pricetag to buy the domain name was too high.

St. John's discovered the internet about the same time as a WWI Japanese solider hiding in a cave on Iwo Jima for 65 years did.

I am guessing SJU rebranded to STJ with fears that potential applicants entering www.sju.com thinking st. john's, weren't instead driven to the st. joe's website.
