APR Scores

NCAA released APR scores which tracks the academic performance of each student-athlete on scholarship. Today, St John's last in the Big East with 944, Seton Hall second with 990. Villanova was first with perfect 1,000.

Something else for AD Cragg to work on. This would not be tolerated at Duke. He'll get it done!!

Scores should reset in some form when there is a coaching change.
Not fair to the new coach

It is not entirely about the coach, but about the school and what its admin and athletic department tolerate. I'd like to know how the score is calculated and what it reflects.

If a coach didn't care and a coach recruited kids who couldn't cut it and then leaves the new coach is picking up the pieces. I doubt during the interview process they had the new APR scores at their fingertips. Not saying wipe the slate clean but some mechanism where a new coach isn't behind the 8 ball. Pretty sure SJU has had the same academic advisor in athletics since I was a student.

Just explains why Villanova has been the "Cadillac" of the BE on and off the court in recent years\
Excellent players who are also excellent students
A model for us to aspire to achieve in the future

Should I assume this encompasses all student-athletes or is it just Men's Basketball?

According to Zach it’s just basketball.

If 1000 is perfect what's wrong with 944 ... I would be worried if it were 800 or less. Academically SJU is not
Duke or Villanova and is probably appropriately placed at 944.

IMO, last place is never a good metric, no matter how it's sliced.

I also believe, and I could be wrong, that the score is a total combined average of the last five years. If I'm right about that, then we are still paying the price for Rysheed leaving, after he was declared ineligible. That's the biggest thing that can dock your score.

800 or less probably means the end of the program if it is even possible to score that low. Would probably mean a team of 13 Blutarskys.

As can players leaving mid semester, ie Ponds this semester as he has been in LA training.

Is this score really that important as long as you are in compliance? I get that it places a little more pressure on CMA as its a five year score but as a veteran head coach I am sure he will manage it.

I'm not sure about that, since Ponds was eligible when he left. If he tried to come back, they won't declare him ineligible until next fall (technically). He was still eligible at the time he left.

Jordan was declared ineligible by the NCAA, and then left. There might be a difference.

And let's be fair its 2019. You can do work remotely. So if players who leave early to test draft waters can't do the work remotely they just truly don't care

The NCAA tabulates these APR ratings on a multi year and single year basis. I think the latest years are through 2017/18.
Scores are affected by players transferring or dropping out and when so, if they’re academically eligible or ineligible.
Arkansas’s men’s basketball scores were 964 for a multi year score from 2014-15, and 918 for a single year. The Razorbacks ranked 12th of 14 in the multi-year category and last in the single year category.
Kentucky had perfect scores.
This surprises me but it is what it is.

I meant it as Ponds left campus so he wasn’t finishing up his classes, most likely giving him an F in each class. Unless like mentioned, he is finishing them remotely online or through some agreement between professor and athlete.
