Barry is earning a head coach's salary at St. John's and earns more than Bob McKillop at Davidson. He was hired to recruit impact players in the 4/5 star category that is required for Chris Mullin "not to fail". Until he signs that big fish and not the 3* players that Matt Abdelmassih is signing there will be irresponsible rumors and vague allegations. There has been pressure on Slice more than his entire career since coming to St. John's because we have such a damaged brand. Our St. John's "Fan forums" are littered with rumor mongers. One recent rumor had Mary Lavin "engaged" while still married to Steve Lavin. Another had Marcus Lovett transferring and questioning whether he would return to campus. That rumor died when it was discovered that he had been back to campus and working out with teammates while the rumor was circulated. Now veteran enforcement moderator Moose advertises dissent within the coaching staff. While referencing roses he intimates something stinks on Union Turnpike. Of course it all could be possible given Slice is a restless soul with a very young wife who has shared with him success at Pitt and Kentucky and traded it all for the arduous task of rebuilding a basketball program that has been victimized by coaching malpractice from Mahoney to Jarvis to Lavin. Until the purveyors of these rumors see results rather than last place predictions they will be content to be washer women instead of sports bloggers with spotty sources.
Now for those who will not get this weekend's NY Times, Slice says hello:

St. John's fans are worse than a bunch of teenage girls when it comes to rumor-mongering. It's unreal. It was an awful season, but people just need to chill. Rome wasn't built in a day. We're not going to rebuild a basketball program that was in tatters in 1 day. Just need to set realistic expectations, and if we don't meet them, then we can start panicking.

Welcome aboard Frank! My Jewish friends use the word Yenta and on sports forums it is a natural trait. In Slice's case it generated enough inquiry that yenta fans were tweeting basketball writers who in turn reached out to the coaching staff who in turn had discussions that may have smoothed over a problem. Barry is old school and wears his heart on the sleeve of his three piece suit. He may have learned his lesson not to confide in SJ yentas and not be so obvious around young front office staffers who share their observations with people.
