Anti-male commercials?

It seems that for a while now every time I'm watching a game or something, commercials come on and for some reason 75% of them seem to have the same exact theme and blueprint. A "lucky to have her" middle-aged, overweight, balding, unattractive, goofy white guy does something wrong and the gorgeous, sophisticated, smart woman rolls her eyes and gives us a look as though to say "look what I have to put up with". I know I'm not just imagining this...literally everyday I see this stuff. For some reason it's not only the males that are the topic of jokes, it seems to be almost exclusively a white male thing. Whenever I see a white guy in a commercial regardless of age, the black guy always seems to be this attractive, fit, suave character.

I know I'm really going out on a limb here and already foresee the kinds of negative comments I'll undoubtedly get for this, since I'm basically opening myself up for hate just for noticing something controversial and having the balls to talk about it. My main question though is: do you guys notice this phenomenon with commercials too? I honestly see this as a recurring theme in the overwhelming majority of commercials. Would be much appreciated if responses can be kept intelligent and civil as I'm not looking for trouble, just other opinions.

Fluoxetine (also known by the tradenames Prozac, Sarafem, Fontex, among others) is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. Fluoxetine was first documented in 1974 by scientists from Eli Lilly and Company.[1] It was presented to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in February 1977, with Eli Lilly receiving final approval to market the drug in December 1987. Fluoxetine went off-patent in August 2001.[2]

Fluoxetine is approved for the treatment of major depression (including pediatric depression), obsessive-compulsive disorder (in both adult and pediatric populations), bulimia nervosa, panic disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.[3] In addition, fluoxetine is used to treat trichotillomania if cognitive behaviour therapy is unsuccessful.[4] In combination with olanzapine it is known as Symbyax.

Despite the availability of newer agents, fluoxetine remains extremely popular. In 2010, over 24.4 million prescriptions for generic formulations of fluoxetine were filled in the United States alone,[5] making it the third most prescribed antidepressant after sertraline (SSRI; became generic in 2006) and citalopram (SSRI; became generic in 2003).[5] In 2011, 6 million prescriptions for fluoxetine were handed out in the UK.[6]

Is this why you aren't married yet? Too busy studying the psychology of commercials.

White guys definitely get our revenge by having all those male enhancement commercials that is geared to us.

Women and "the black guy always seems to be this attractive, fit, suave character" miss out.

So who gets the last laugh now?

I am too old to care. Maybe that's why I have TIVO.

I must admit you are funny.

I am very much interested in the psychology of many things, thus my reason for being in a MS Psych program at SJ. I really only started to notice this theme in commercials maybe 2 years ago...after a short google search I see that I'm clearly not alone in my perception. Trust me, not too long ago I would be one of the ones making fun of this thread, but every day I see a commercial like this. Pay attention to the roles in them...the male is always the ugly or stupid one and the woman is always normal and attractive. I wouldn't care if roles were reversed in many of them, but the fact that they are almost all the same makes it so obvious. Most people will say "Well, the commercial is just using humor" and that may be true, but it has subliminal gender roles embedded in them as well.

joe, I applaud you for raising the point to which I agree but also would like to keep it civil.
Unfortunately males (especially straight ones) in general have become the low end of the totem pole. e.g. women get in clubs for free pay less for drinks, get free advice, get recognition, e.g. "women on the rise, women luncheons, women only classes, women only articles, women only excercise classes, women only clubs, etc.),get promoted over males to reach quota's established by womens groups. If men were given this treatment there would be an uproar.
the only saving grace is that women pay more for haircuts and shoes.I feel bad for the next generation of males who are expected to hold the door then get out of the way.

Ok here is the answer in a nutshell. The reigns of the TV remote in most homes is held by married women (in particular married white women). They do most of the shopping as well. The ads are geared towards them, and if the advertiser can poke fun at a white guy (i.e. her white husband) all the better to get her to remember the product.

Appreciated, and please know that by even showing a morsel of support, you are also courageous for merely agreeing. It may not be a politically-correct conversation, but one that needs to be had nonetheless. I did not make things this way, I certainly observe it and critique it. If you watch commercials through a conscious lens, it's hard not to notice this stuff. Most people don't really pay attention to commercials, and content is ignored, but when you really get into the psychology in them it can be very surprising. The fact that some people don't notice the misandry in a ton of commercials today says a lot about the state of our country in terms of emasculation. Yet even more evidence of this sad state in America today is the red squiggly line under the word "misandry" which is actually a legitimate term. I don't think asking for equality is something a bigot would do by the way. I think every race and every gender should play the dunce role in commercials, not one selective group.

So are you saying white males need an advocate the likes of AL Sharpton or a Helen Gurley Brown, etc? if so you got my vote.

Ok kind of funny story since most people here have met my fiancee.

Those who dont know her she is an actress and does modeling.

Anyway a few years ago she was one of the final 2 people cast for some medical commercial or print work ( I forget ) but it was for some aids drug. It paid 5 grand for the day I think plus royalties.

She didnt want to take it and we had a big argument and I told her to take the job because it pays great money

Then she calmly told me that if she took the aids job that would make me the aids guy since everyone from LI to NJ knows us it seems.

I thought about it for a second and told her know way in hell is she taking that job. lol

Those male enhancement commercials are aimed at white guys because quite frankly God took care of that naturally in others.

Cool it Joe3, there is nothing you can do to change the "current wisdom". Except enjoy your day to day life and forget the Madison ave hucksters who are too afraid to challenge the purveyors of this new credo. It is not really a white thing or a male thing it is a success thing versus a under culture of nothingness.

The under-culture always goes after the achievers. Those who need no help, will certainly get no help but will get the most criticism..Its as if it's unfair that we had to break our ass and work 50 hours a week the first ten years of our careers to have any chance at all of success. Those needing the most, get the most and are embraced as the good guys or good gals, even if they sit on their ass all day.

In addition, to most of us who have reached some level of success, our normal day to day life involves little grousing; just get on with your life. Grin and bear it, or even better, forget about it.You have had a good education, a roof over your head and three meals a day and have been luckier than most so just go out and do your thing and stop moaning and groaning, or you will begin sounding like those you are complaining about.

You can get high blood pressure worrying about stuff that is basically inconsequential.

In some sad way, I miss this guy. I know he lurks here, and prob should consider his absence from posting a nice respite. Even so, his very curious views on life created his own little Joe3 world in his head, and it was fun to hear him defend his absurdities.

Don't know if you saw me in the Lawrence thread or not, but possibly rather than name calling and labeling things as "absurd" or "curious", it would be more conducive for you to actually give a gentlemen's rebuttal...one of actual substance rather than e-jabs. So, is it possible you can explain who/what/where/when/why of your attempt at a rebuttal? Something is only absurd until you can explain why it's absurd validly. Until you demonstrate that, it's merely a word. My "own little Joe3 world" is the same world you live in. I notice certain things, and you dismiss them. Some people pick up patterns better than others. If all that's in your arsenal is vitriol and name-calling/labeling, then don't bother responding. Also, I will be on every once in a blue moon but certainly not often.

He lives!! This is like Easter Sunday! But unlike THAT resurrection, there was a promise never to return. The folly of your thinking is that you analyze certain injustices, form a conclusion, then go to great lengths to formulate a defense of that conclusion by tendering articles that to you offer proof of the validity of the conclusion. More often than you think, it's so far off, and you cling to your conclusion, making dialogue impossible.

Maybe your problem is then ego, or narcissism. Rarely in dialogue on this board, do you accept someone elses opinion as perhaps correct. It's clear in your posts that you have no real interest in exchange of ideas, and used this board as a place to spam your opinions. I really don't have any vitriol or negative personal feelings for you at all, and in fact legitimately posted that it was clear how hurt you were by the negative opnions posted about you in the since closed thread. I think the mods here (Kranmars in partcular) was very kind to you in shutting that thread down. Did you express any thanks to him privately? It woudl have been nice, but I don't think you roll that way.

Rather than think this corner of the world is against you, why not consider for a moment, why you elicit such responses from people here. I'm certainly not one of your more vocal detractors, and again, I don't come here to offend people, so please don't take offense.
