This is a really interesting story. A few years back when still at Marist, we recruited this guy Menelik Watson for basketball. The kid was an absolute BEAST. 6'7 300 lbs...the guy was a mammoth and he wasn't overweight he was a rock. We expected a lot from him as a post presence banger kind of guy, but it never really materialized. He averaged like 4 PPG and 5 rebounds.
One weekend at a bar, I saw Watson and went to talk to him about basketball. He was a really cool guy and I immediately noticed he had a strong english accent. It was funny to hear from a huge black guy I won't lie. We talked about his transition to America and all that and how excited he was for new opportunities. A year after talking with him, while browsing ESPN I noticed major headlines on recruiting news in college football. I saw the name "Menelik Watson" in the Florida State section. Confused as hell, I made sure it was the same guy. Apparently he left Marist after a subpar basketball career, went to a JUCO, tried playing football and became a TOP 5 national recruit! He signed with FSU for a full scholarship and was going to start. Now another few years later, I just checked up on him and he might be headed to the NFL and likely a 1st rounder. This might seem really random, and it is. It's just such a crazy story to go from being a bad basketball player at Marist to a top 5 commit at FSU and now possibly a 1st round NFL draft pick in like 3 or 4 years.
