It's great advice... however I was never a fan of the "control" part of the diagram

Reality is not too many things one is in total control of....

I like "influence" better...

I never realized how much wisdom our ex-coaches possess. Which reminds me, I have to finish reading this...

Lavs was mentored by the very best.    I just finished streaming Ricky Gervais' Netflix series After Life, and the only C word in my head is one profanity used frequently in the US that here is high on the offensive list.   Gervais would likely call Jarvis that.

Seriously though.  To me, this advice from Lavin is a good insight into the persona that still allows him to love and support SJU despite being terminated as coach.

What chapter does he show the most graceless was to forfeit games?

Jarvis IMHO gets a bad rap compared to other coaches we had. End of the day we went to Elite 8, in 1999 won a Big East Tourney 2000, and an NIT in 2003. I would love to sign up for that right now.

he didn’t get along with a corrupt priest and was let go. Did he take on problem children ,yes he did. Did Alex Evans provide aid to Abe Keira yes he did. My biggest issue with Jarvis was not disciplining Grady Reynolds if we had an Ad or a President with cojones they would have taken the decision  out of Jarvis hands. When Ed Manetta left there was no checks and balances we were left with an empty suit in Dave Wegzyrn . Also the Pitt scandal happened under Kevin Clark’s watch.

I remember a post years back who you like better as a coach Jarvis or Roberts (a few years into Norm’s tenure) I was on team Jarvis side.   As the great Bill Parcells said you are what your record says you are.

Agree on analogy, interesting show and funny cast of characters. Lived in DC for all Jarvis GWU years, was so well thought of, came to SHU and changed, was so surprised to observe. He was a fine bench coach shame couldn't handle the NYC scene.

Once people write their biography's. lie seems to go downhill hill form their!

Not saying you are wrong or right, but I do believe that every single coach we have hired did have positive qualities and their contributions were not all negative.   As fans and adults, on a daily basis we spend an inordinate amount of time shoveling dirt on former and current coaches and administrators.   Jarvis very objectively brought us closer to the Final Four than any coach other than Carnesecca and I'm pretty sure that includes Lapchick, as far as I know.   I doesn't negate the problems and negatives, but at some point gotta let that stuff go and move on.    In the end, it only aggravates those who perceive themselves to be aggrieved and doesn't impact those who we have displeasure against.

Modern Organizations. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall. 1964. ISBN 978-0-13-596049-3 by Amitai Etzioni.  Only on Redmen.com does one get led back to decision-making theory.

It's funny - my views on Jarvis have bounced around the last few years.  I was crazy down on him when he was fired (and he deserved to be), but overall I've mellowed a little about him recently.  I live in DC and agree with the other poster that Jarvis did a great job at GW and was very well thought of when he was hired.

He did very well with Fran's players, and I for one thought we'd be in great shape after what appeared to be a blockbuster recruiting in 2000.  That class didn't pan out - Miles never came, Shaw and Cuffe were less than advertised and Diakate wasn't very good. Then Cook left too early.  After that he rode Hatten and a bunch of misfit toys to an NCAA berth (his best coaching job IMHO).  When Hatten left, the program was really in bad shape.  Jarvis recruited Ingram who never lived up to the McD AA billing, and the season he was fired after six games was a complete disaster.  He left the program in the toilet - Darryl Hill was good, Hamilton was a decent big, but then he stocked the roster with questionable JUCO guys that were ultimately ruled ineligible.

Overall, I'd rank him below Lavin and Fran of the post-Louie coaches, and ahead of everyone else.  What's disappointing is when you consider what could have been.

Just wanted point out that Frank McGuire took the 1951-52 St. John’s team to the final four. They lost in the Championship game to Kansas.

Think I'll wait for the movie.
It’s going to be a 9 episode series on Netflix called “Horse Game”.
