ACC fires ref

Karl Hess, who we've had many times before (and probably will have more of now, unfortunately), has been let go by the ACC after an incident last week.

As you can see, he has not been a stranger to controversy in the past.

Can they fire him from Big East also, he is the pits.

Gaffney is the worse official to do Big east games by a wide margin.

He was horrendous last Saturday against Butler and against Providence last year in BET.

HE STINKS

Brings me back to the 60's when the fans used to get on Steve Honzo (sp?)
One of the worst refs I ever saw at the college level

He's bad, and the games take so long with him, because not only does he call a million fouls, but he's OCD when it comes to keeping the floor dry. One little wet spot takes 5 minutes for the ball boys to clean up, because he's never satisfied. This is especially frustrating when games are played at arenas that have hockey, as condensation from the ice frequently pops up.

Hess has a bad attitude, too, and Jim Burr never like Looie's sideline antics (even though that was not directed at him), and has held that against every SJU team for the last 30+ years. I also don't miss Ted Valentine doing Big East games.

While in college, I attained IABO certification to ref. After a few goes at it, I decided not to pursue it. Calling a basketball game well is so ridiculously difficult from the floor, I sometimes think it would serve the game well if a ref sat in the stands. After all, we never get a call wrong from our seats :)

Incredibly stupid thing to say in this day and age.

Tough gig.

Back-to-back tweets from Jeff Goodman on developments here (FWIW, he spells Hess's first name wrong in the second one). Big East is investigating this:

Carl Hess has now withdrawn from all American Athletic Conference games -- beginning immediately. Will not work Houston game on Sunday.
