Lovett and Ponds will soon be making a name for themselves in the BE. Its gonna come down to their supporting cast. If 5 of the 9 other available players are good or even above average I think we will be middle of the pack BE. Less than that and we wont compete for top 7.

In all of these enjoyable projections, the X factor is injuries & extent of such. At least we have better depth to recover from that, if an isolated case. Secondly, I may be wrong, but sensing the ineligibility, suspension, AWOL bugs we have often dealt with will not be part of equation. Unless I am missing something, this looks like a great group.

Not that I necessarily expect it but I'd like to see Amar coming out as a mature force on the team. my biggest issue with Amar has been decision making. He's made more than a few stupid and unnecessary fouls and shot selection not the best. His frosh season he came in an provided some fire and muscle that was largely missing and you accept those type of mistakes made for a frosh trying to be aggressive. If he plays as an upperclassman he can be an asset. He's got strength, size and can play very aggressive when he is not parking out looking to shoot 3s. And of course he's had a few nice games doing that too but if he focuses upon being a solid, low mistakes role player he could provide some maturity - at least that is what I'd like to see from him.

Unfortunately for Amar and the team Amar has had a highlight rebound and dunk or two and I find he is constantly looking to replicate same. As opposed to using his size and strength to box out , to do the necessary dirty work to be an effective team player he is looking to be on sports centres top 10 plays of the night. Until that changes he will be of little use to he team.

He's definitely an easy kid to root for and at worst he provides some energy for the guys. I actually think he can be more than that though.

He is a very nice, positive, team oriented kid, but I hope he learns to guard (like most everyone last year). In addition to fouling too obviously & frequently, I just think one on one he has trouble guarding a fire hydrant. Then again, kids can improve. I hope staff has defensive improvement high on the needs list. It is nice to have depth & hopefully offensive firepower, but to what end w/o solid D?

Fully agree on the concerns over D.

Some amount of blocked shots from Yakwe, Sima & Owens(and even when/if Zach Brown arrives next year) will be nice and fun to watch but that's not enough..

Kids have to want to play defense - hustle , get boards and stay tight... and staff has to have the mindset to ensure recruits willing to get hands dirty and teach it consistently and demand it during games. Hope Mullin, Mitch & St. Jean are up for the task on that end (or bring in some of their retired NBA connections to guest coach a few practices - if that's even allowed).

I like the logic and I am super excited. But, it is exceptionally rare for a team to have multiple freshmen able to win in conference play. Learning how to close games, draw fouls, play team defense, etc.....takes time. That said, in response to your thread, here would be my five.....

Yakwe
Fruedenberg
Ahmed
Sima
Mussini

I generally agree just saying what I'd hope to see. Like I said in another thread he is our only true upper-classman. I've seen players become quite more mature and in specifically ways like you are defining such as Chucky Sproling who took a lot of heat for not being a great scorer but ended up becoming a very good defender and overall team leader in a quiet way.

If Keady and Richmond on staff as special assistants couldn't do any on court coaching doubt you can bring in anyone else.

I'm not sure if the rules have changed but Coach Cal use to have a JUCO coach come in to teach his motion offense. This was a few years ago at Kentucky.

Anyone who believes that Mussini gets lost on the bench this year is wrong.

Vance Walberg. But it may have been at Memphis when he visited. A guest is technically not a staff member, so I think that's how they get away with it.

At the very least I think he starts the first game, and transitions to the bench if he gets overwhelmed guarding the 2. But he's definitely part of the rotation.

The problem with Sproling was that the announcers constantly made reference to the 74 points he once scored in a high school game, implying that he should have lead the nation in scoring as a collegian.

Same with Felipe Lopez. He was on the cover of S.I. (ie: the kiss of death) before he even played a game at St John's. Felipe had a nice career as a Johnnie but he never could have lived up to the hype that was heaped upon him before his freshman year began.

Of course he plays , we only have 4 guards and right now Ellison has a slight injury. Logic dictates he plays , how many minutes a game he plays and at the 1 or 2 depends on multiple factors which have been discussed ad nauseum on this board.

Yawke has potential to be a real breakout star, IMO. Last year, he missed half the preseason due to eligibility issues and then spent a lot of minutes having to play the center position --which he was way undersized for-- due to lack of team depth. If he gets to spend quality time in his true position as a forward, look out.

Thanks. It was definitely at Kentucky, when Kentucky had the mini-series on EPSN. Think the name was All-Access Kentucky.

It must have been 2012-13 season as I wanted to check out Ryan Harrow.
