2019 Mock Draft

Sports illustrated (sports nation) also has him as a first round pick (pick 27) on their NBA mock draft. Man, knowing where he’s coming from ( financially speaking) this would be so awesome to see.

With a successful season he could go higher so every game he, the team and Mullin will be under the scope. Here on redmen.com we have a special micron microscope. Some will see through it and some may refuse to remove their rose colored glasses before use. In the end it's the record that will tell the true story.

Kind of like how being POY and winning a national championing propelled Brunson up the draft.

That's not everything, though. Washington went 9-22 the year Markelle Fultz was there, and he still went #1 overall in the draft. We were 13-19 the only year Harkless was here, and he was picked just outside the lottery.

In the NBA if you are small like Brunson and Ponds, especially if you are not super athletic, you need everything in your favor ,(I.e. leading your team to success as well as individual excellence) to be a first round choice. Harkless and Fultz were different players.

I think Ponds is super athletic and very quick. He can be lethal on offense.
Last year, teams keyed on him almost exclusively, double-teamed him often and he got frustrated, launching moon shots at times.
He needs to show that athleticism and explosiveness consistently and also play intense D.
He should have the opportunity to blossom next season.
Let’s go Johnnies.

Two different leagues & barometers of success. Size in NBA at wing spot for example is obviously ridiculous. Stats in college don’t necessarily translate to next level. Ponds has to hone his PG skills to be very attractive in draft. His lack of size and thin build don’t help. The lower end of first round seems reasonable. Score less & dish more may be right formula to improve on that, but man there is a ton of talent out there.

You're 100% correct, Paultz
Many college "stars" do not translate into NBA careers
Look at all of the G League rosters - most are littered with former college "star" players
We've certainly had our share of these players through the years at St John's
Whether Shamorie stays 1 or 2 more years, he will always have size "issues"
The NBA seems to be obsessed with size these days
There aren't many Tiny Archibald sized guys in the NBA these days
But I think your formula for his future success is spot on and I think he could be successful

Btw, sad to say I saw Tiny is having a heart transplant. Grew up near Clinton High in Bronx & enjoyed seeing him way back when. I wish him well.

Had the opportunity to talk basketball with Tiny. Always interesting to listen to a pro's perspective. Wish him a speedy recovery.

This site unfortunately for Ponds not as optimistic. This is the site I followed as a Knick fan leading up to this draft and they were really accurate.
Personally I think he can sneak into 1st round though.[/quote]

Hope they’re wrong about Shamorie. Curious the site doesn’t include Mustapha Heron. Would think if he plays, he’ll opt for NBA draft—and with a great season, his skills and size might attract a tram’s Interest.
We shall see.

All of these sites are just guessing. They have Naz Reid #6. I saw him a few times at IS8 and was not impressed at all. No way is he 1 and done. Think Nick Richards.

See Kellan Grady from Davidson listed on that site at # 12.

Not surprised.. I saw him play a few times this year live, including the game he had 39 against St. Bonaventure in OT. Avg 18+ pts/game and 37% from 3...

McKillop landed a good one with this kid. Highly talented and will draw tons of comparisons to Steph Curry even more this year.
