Maher's buying lobster rolls and IPAs for everyone.:) ;)

For those who attended the 1870 Court pre-game reception yesterday, can you please provide any insight on attendance
turnout, type of foods offered etc ?

Thinking its probably tough to get decent turnout 1-2 hrs before game on weekday

Thanks !!

Maybe 50 people total? Didn’t eat but looked like catered Italian e.g. pasta, marsala, etc. Also had a bar with wine, beer, water, soda, etc. I was stopped by security as I walked in Taffner and they said only students were allowed in. I told him I’m alum and was there for the 1870 Court. He still said it’s only for students but after I insisted it wasn’t he kind of threw his hands up and said no one told him that...yes really lol. Anyway I told him it was open to R&W, season ticket holders, and alumni and he let me in. The advertising was wrong...it doesn’t matter who you are. You can go for $10 and you get a food and 2 drink voucher. Can pay via card or cash. They have an iPad to confirm if you are alum. They were trying to make it seem exclusive but I suggested that we wait until we have the support and success before doing that. Right now we can’t afford to be exclusive when the fans aren’t showing.

Thanks for the detail Mike !!

Helps to know as I'll have my wife & daughter with me and they like to grab a bite before games.

Wow...50 attendees is incredibly low. Maybe they should limit these to weekend games, or only Big East opponents at CA ??

This is going to take a lot of publicity and winning to gain traction.

They note you can pay in advance online, but I dont see that option anywhere.

Good idea and intent though vs. the tiny R/W room they used inside CA.

Definitely low turnout but the rollout was pretty shaky and still pretty recent. They confused many fans when they said you have to be R&W, alumni, or season ticket holders when in fact everyone is welcome. Some of the administration was walking around mingling with fans and Cragg was there as well floating. The 1870 court area is cordoned off by a low fence and on the other side there is trivia, inflatables for kids, etc. Even saw some people shooting around which was cool.

I'm not surprised being it was a 630 game.

I really hate 6:30 start times.

Working in a school has its benefits I suppose. I usually leave straight from work and drive about 35 minutes down the LIE. Gives me enough time to get some Acquista's, go to 1870, and then the game which is nice. Will be working with admin. to offer some ideas and help any way I can. Seems to be a sense of desperation in terms of how to get fans out before and during the game. I have some good ones I think and have consulted with other schools including Michigan State, Miami (FL), etc.

Here's an idea. Don't play 630 games. 90 percent of those fans working in Manhattan will not go. Those who live out in that direction sure but even then SJU isn't on a subway or LIRR stop. I know why its TV and all but its just all around a bad idea.

Right, 6:30 start I have to leave work an hour early to get to the game. I can't do that once, sometimes twice, a week. Absurd start time.

I sometimes forget about my private sector friends who work at least until 5 if not later plus adding mass transit can easily add 90 minutes I'm sure. Then that's just to get home and then they may want to change into more comfortable clothes. Then driving to campus or getting back on a train. Makes 6:30 very tough, though I'm not sure it's in the admin's control.

630 is TV driven is my understanding. Because 7 and 9 was tough since 9pm game never started at 9 due to 7 running long. Most of the time they tried to hold up the start. Can only do that so long and so many times. So if you want to be on TV and you want to avoid a 'late' start of 830 where the game ends at 1030 you are pigeonholed to the early start.

That's my exact situation. I work and live in Manhattan, so just a huge hassle to get there for a 630 start.

I stopped by the 1870 reception and they also had some nice free alumni gifts. Got myself a nice St. John's Alumni pen :)

8 of the 10 weekday games at Carnesecca are 6:30 starts. That kinda sucks.

Considering going to 1870 before tomorrow's game with my daughter. I did inquire if kids are also $10 or maybe a little less. At first there seemed there was a possibility but was notified everyone is $10.

6:30 is an early start on the other hand last seasons I believe last game was a 9pm start then it went to Doubt OT , talk about getting back late to Farmingdale!
