2014-2015 Men's Basketball Attendence

Renovation, not new arena, according to JJ's post, unless VU changed those 2013 priorities.

I saw that also. I was at a fundraiser, and it was announced as a new arena. I think it may be the reverse, that they changed it to a renovation. The Pavilion isn't as old as CA but my guess is that the renovation will be massive. It was of course, the Dupont Pavilion, endowed by John DuPont, who was chronicled in in Foxcatcher. In any event, they have an impressive campaign with a much smaller alumni base.

The 20,000 people who showed up for the Duke game boosted the numbers. Even then, only DePaul and Butler ranked below us. We can do better and we will.

Surprised to see we had the highest number of home games (21) among those listed. Probably a function of the relatively small size of the Big East and staying home for our NC games.

Opponents such as Duke are illustrative of why SJU still plays Syracuse, and would entertain UCONN, or even Notre Dame, each of whom draw well in the Garden. They are important revenue generators for a program that hasn't drawn well enough on its own.

Exactly. Here are the attendance numbers for games played at MSG this season. It's incredible that we couldn't draw 9k against Villanova.

#5 Duke 19,812
Georgetown 13,615
Creighton 10,759
Providence 8,973
#8 Villanova 8,565
vs. Fordham 8,074
Marquette 7,532
Xavier 6,634
#10 Gonzaga 5,548
Minnesota 5,128

Of course, those bottom 2 games were not park of the season ticket package, and IMO, should not count towards the home total.

I believe the Villanova game was at 9PM on a Tuesday night, which probably had something to do with keeping the crowd under 10K.

Really great point JSJ. I'm sure TV money trumps attendance, but I wonder what the break even is for the Garden in terms of attendance. Those 9 pm games are a killer for anyone who works, anyone who is older, and any kids in school who would otherwise go to a 7 pm game. In other words, they suck for everyone.

The 9pm starts are horrible. That said, Georgetown played Villanova on a Monday at 9pm and managed to draw 14k fans. We should at least aspire to that.

Also if I remember correctly there was a snowflake the night of the Nova game.

I think the worst example was Xavier. That was an absolutely huge game for us at the end of the year. It could have been the difference between making the tourney and not. Our fans did not show up and the team started off flat. The other two awful showings were pre-season / non-conference games that were not part of the season ticket package. No excuse for Xavier though.
