1985 + 30 could be magic

It was 1985 and st johns beat villanova 3 times. St Johns was the clearly better team. A one seed going into the tournament, yet the 8th seed villanova took home all the marbles.
For that reason another loss to Villanova, if we get that far in the BET, wouldnt concern me. In fact it could be a good omen }}} I am looking for history to repeat itself but this time for us. What comes around goes around.

The similarities occurred to me as well. However we don't have any players high flying their way through the Tournament on cocaine, so we'll be at a disadvantage there.

Yes Nova was an 8th seed but they were good. Of their 10 losses 6 were to Gtown, SJU and BC-which lost to Memphis on a last 2nd shot in Sweet 16. Three of the guys on the 85 team made the pros and 2 of them were first round draft picks.

We are good too.

I hate when people put me in the situation that cuases me to knock the team but you guys are out of control. I am content with getting in but if we win one I am esctatic. Get me to a Sweet 16 and Lavin can call crazy timeouts and give nicknames to whomever he wants and I'll never utter a disparaging word. Since I have been a fan going back to Mullin's frosh season I have had the incredible luck(yes considering what has transpired since I do consider myslf lucky) to have witnessed 1 final four and 2 Elite 8's. So you will have to excuse me for not gathering up the ticker tape. Crazy expectations are fine, but something tells me if we lose in 1st round some of the same people will start trashing the team.

My point is Nova was a very good team, Gtown was great team which is what made upset so amazing. Eddie Pickney would far and away be out best player and he had a good pro career. Dwayne McClain and Harold Pressley were both NBA players.

They also lost to a tough Syracuse team.

The way you worded it made it sound like you didn't think SJU was a good team. I don't have big expectations for our guys to go deeper than two rounds. Sorry if I misread your post

Yeah besides Cuse I think they also lost to Georgia and Maryland which both made tourney. Not sure who 10th loss was to.

As for young Jack, no worries I could see us getting to a Sweet 16 if we somehow avoid a #1 in 2nd round. Just didn't think it was realistic to compare us to 85 Nova team. As I said being insanely optimistic is fine as long as you don't kill the team for not living up to them. That last part not directed at you Jack.

Again, considering how infrequently it happens, I ma just happy to see their name called Sunday.

Good point about the quality of the opponents being 6 out of 10 "good" losses but you'd also have to say that of our 10 losses you could include 7 of them as "good": Duke, Gonzaga, Georgetown, Butler x2, Villanova x2. Seton Hall was a big east road game and also playing so well at the time that they also beat Nova.

G'town was a juggernaut that year. Not as deep as Kentucky this year but Kentucky didn't have anywhere near as tough a season in terms of quality of opponents that was the Big East. All things being equal I think that G'town team would beat this year's Kentucky team as would that year's St John's team - with or without the 3pt line. With it, I think Mullin would eat them for lunch and it wouldn't have even been close.

I like this team and enjoy watching them. Ultimately we are way to thin up front to make a Nova type run. Remmeber, yes he wasn't Ewing but Pickney was probably the 2nd best big in the BE that year.

Gtown was just a terrible matchup for us. We played an almost perfect game the one we won and only won by a point. There are lots of things that might have helped a little, playing Jackson over Moses(yes Fun that would have been an improvement) playing Jones and Rowan more-Glass outside shooting was exposed against Gtown. But again they were a bad matchup.

BTW the Box and One disguised as an OZ shower scene defense they were allowed to get away with on Mullin did not help matters.

Let's all calm down and take one game at a time. Providence is our next opponent, let's beat them first for the third time this season which is difficult in itself!
As far as the NCAA tournament is concerned, as we all know it is about matchups! As the late Al MCGuire once said in order to win a championship you need to win one very close game, as well as one at the buzzer! Luck also comes into the equation which is not something we have had a lot of in recent years! I have been waiting 45 years for a National Chamionship! Is this the year? I hope so, I am getting too old to wait much longer!
