“40 Minutes of Hell” up close and personal

This was the most surprising (in a good way) SJU team of my lifetime. It was Brian Mahoney’s first year and David Cain rose from Louie’s bench to become the best PG in the BE that season.

Cain is masterful in the first half. He was able to shred the Razorback press because he was playing at such a high level all year long.

But then look what happens.... the wave upon wave of players that keep pressing and trapping him. SJU lacked a secondary ball handler. And by mid second half, Cain was out of gas. And the rest of SJU could not deal with the chaos.

Game, set, match.

Should be noted that the core of this Razorback team would win the NCAA championship the following year.

Mo Brown wasn’t ready to step in while 2Gs Derek Brown and Lee Green were poor ballhandlers.

That team relied on Cain for everything.

In post game presser Mahoney was asked why he didn't foul in final minute when he could have put Arkansas to the line for 3 straight one and ones and his infamous answer was "Hey, do you know any 6 point plays?". I knew right then that things would go down hill from there with that kind of losing mentality but hey he learned under Louie who was not exactly famous for extending games ala Rollie Massimino and Jim Valvano. Will say Mahoney was and is a very nice man though.

In all seriousness, will the "40 Minutes of Hell" phrase actually work at a Catholic university? I think we might have to adopt "94 Feet of Heat".

Pretty sure hell isn't a bad word. And if Booby G. or Oliva think it is I'll be calling it 40 portions of abortion from now on.

Haha, that definitely would resonate!

I guess that's why it came to mind. He definitely didn't use that strategy.

Opponents: 40 minutes of hell
Red Storm: 40 minutes of heaven
Balances out :)

( an alternative: 40 minutes of purgatory lol )

Crappy memory but I'd like to see us with that intensity. FWIW I still think the Cain charge with @ one minute left was b s (=
