(EXHIBITION) Michigan (MSG), Sat., Oct. 25, 7p, Big Ten+

Considering the Towson game I am overall pleased with this game.

Always want a win but we don’t lose in the standings.

Tough game with all the fouls for some so hard to judge their games.

Darling much better today. Mitchell is gonna be a joy to watch. Really hope Jackson finds his way. I want this kid to be so good here.

Enjoyed meeting up with happy and sju85 and their families before the game at Tir Na Ng.

If you lead with seems like a good kid 😂

We were + 3 in the far too many minutes. Maybe he should have played more
Darling is being ridiculously scrutinized IMO. He was far from the problem last night; two things caused the loss IMO.

First, the front court is being praised and certainly deserve it to a degree but their inability to cover the court on the press with no adjustment at all on their part on the court or the coaching staff from the bench. Experienced players all and I give Mitchell an obvious pass because he was on the point of the press but leaving the back court exposed for uncontested layup after layup at this level is an abomination. That is certainly correctable but obviously there was no attempt to do so in real time last night, not sure why. Isn’t that what “exhibitions” are for?

Second, people can praise, Sellers, Sanon, and Jackson all they want but games are not played on paper nor on mix tapes. To have none of the three integrated yet is far more long term concerning IMO. I know some are appalled that I dare criticize Pitino but his idea that Sellers or Jackson could “initiate the offense” in a position less basketball approach was not a plan, it was a pipe dream. Again small sample size but:

Sellers has shown nothing in two games and in fairness, needs to get a real chance playing off the ball.

Jackson is lost on both sides of the court and I have no opinion other than that. Again, in fairness, a small sample size but he shows no comfort level on either side of the ball.

Sanon should be coming off the bench in an instant offense role. Has shown by far the most of the three.

That leaves Lefty, who IMO, should either get a real chance, with a real role, but how do you do that? Time to find out if he is the miracle minute or the two clanged foul shots. The problem is you have a glutted backcourt with seemingly no defined roles except for Darling, like it or not.

I would start Darling and either Sellers or Lefty off the ball and see what happens, the team HAS to get a least one shooter on the court to stretch the defense.

Right now, I see a team teetering between year one’s and year two’s identities.

Now on to Pitino, if he was playing to win last night, clearly he calls off the press and makes Michigan beat them in the half court where they scored but with much less consistency and a lot more effort and expenditure of energy.

Finally, after two games, one of which was a real game against a real opponent in a real atmosphere, I think we will finally see a team closer to last years than year ones’, but not without some very real growing pains against a challenging early schedule. I hope I am wrong but
We shall see……….

I don’t have the appetite for a deep dive. I want to win all games especially on our home court. We lost by 2 getting nothing from two of our supposed top 6 players.

Like Logan pointed out. We played in a way that we could learn where if we were playing for a win it could have been much different. Also did anyone notice the insane substitutions. Player would make a mistake. Rick would pull them. Sit them next to Masiello who would show them something on a computer then send them right back in for the player he was pulled for. Less than 30 seconds later (since the refs were blowing whistles non stop).

The point of last night was to learn in the moment.

I couldn’t believe the substitutions yesterday. I was texting some I think darling was just in and out of the lineup 4 times in less than a 2 minute span. I know we had foul trouble but it really was remarkable the fastness of the substitutions back in and out not just darling but a few others.

Yea I picked up on it then started watching Mas. There was someone behind him with a computer they kept passing back and forth. Wasn’t offense defense since it was so early but clearly teaching moments.

Another teaching moment was Ian sitting for the first ten minutes of second half

Ever hear of civility? He had two fouls in the first half, did he pick up his third early in the second? I don’t remember him being in long enough to pick up his third, his absence was felt.
I agree his absence was felt. But you and others asking where him and Joson were clearly don’t understand how fouls work. It’s pretty much a standard if someone picks up 2 fouls in the first half they are glued to the bench. Yes when second half started he picked up fouls again very quickly. Were they cheap? Yes but that’s the cards we were dealt.

Team will be just fine; the usual negative nonsense.
Maybe the team will be fine but the thread was to evaluate the game at hand and like it or not , in this particular game there were issues. The only negative nonsense I see is your response, which is all too common on this site….. over and out.

I was pretty pleased last night. Most Importantly, we learned we're for real and can be a legit top team. Michigan is long and large, talented and deep. Some thoughts:
1 Against major power five teams, we are small up front.
2 Against top power 5 point guards we have weaknesses.
3 Michigan didn't press much at all. That helped us keep our own turnovers down. Forcing 20 plus turnovers was amazing and kept us in the game.
4 I wonder if the Pitino system hurts our three point shooting in two ways a) he breaks down our guys' confidence. Maybe it's gonna take awhile to bring it back as in 5 or 6 games or maybe 1st two games and all of last year were just aberations b I know we subbed liked crazy, but maybe our pressure defense creates tired legs on offensive outside shooting.
5 Zuby is Zuby. Hopkins is real and worth whatever we are paying.
6 We are all going to love Dylan Mitchell.
7 The tough out of conference schedule is gonna be really tough.
8 The fan base is ready. An amazing crowd for an exhibition.
9 What's with the four or five easy layups against our press?
10 Sason is very smooth offensively when it comes to scoring --not so much when it comes to passing.
11We have 10 or 11 players who can get minutes as needed.
12 Coaches need to cut off our hands on defense. Probably will take another few games.
13 I hope we haven't seen the real Ian Jackson or O Sellers yet.
14 Reuben and Lefty are much improved.
15 Andrew Cuomo left a one-point/overtime game at halftime. What a fan!!!
16 We have a long way to go.....guard rebounding, team chemistry, outside shooting, pressing defense.
17 This season is going to be lots of fun.

that’s great he was a +3. I don’t think it really has anything to do with what I’m trying to say.

He’s a tough player. And a Pitino type player which will earn him a lot of minutes. I liked his game tonight. I’m happy he’s on the team.

But I think it’s fair to say that if (and I understand it might be a big if, as there was foul trouble tonight) darling has to be a 30+ mpg guy for this team, all due respect to him, it means something went wrong with this group of guards we assembled, and perhaps we assembled the roster a little more clumsily than I originally thought
As you pointed out, our starting backcourt fouled out in 23 combined minutes. The game also went into overtime. So Darling got 31 minutes and the team played better with him out there than they did with any other guard for long stretches. Against a top ten team in the country. You look at it as troublesome, I look at it as a great sign.

My new seats at MSG are great and behind the bench on a slight angle. When Sanon picked up his fifth foul, he didn’t agree and was really pissed. Then they showed him the tape of it, and his entire body language changed to “I can’t believe I did that” with his hands on his head. Clearly a competitor and cares.

I was also one row in front of some of Ian’s guys. They were annoyed Lefty subbed for him, and then two minutes later were like “nah coach was right, they needed him” lol

Wasn’t at the game but question for those who were: what was the atmosphere like? On TV, it looked to me like there were quite a few Michigan fans under the basket at both ends of the court.

Curious were you in section 109? I think I had similar vantage point.

70/30 SJU at worst.

Their Lets Go Blue didn’t come out clearly until very end.

Michigan fans are like Gtown to me. They just show up. They don’t get too loud

Didn’t see this in the thread this morning, might have missed it. Mitchell three for four from the line. One game, but so was everything else. I’m certainly adding that to the positives.
He’s going to get to the line a lot I think.

Hope he keeps it up
