The New And Improved Off Topic Thread

I’m actually shocked people don’t know that. The, expression “Damn Yankees”didn’t originate because of a Broadway musical about the hatred of the baseball team but originated much further back and the distrust/dislike/hatred the South had for Northerners.
I’m very aware. Just seemed like he was referencing fans and saying Yankees I went to the hatred between Yankee and Mets fans.

I agree. And for the record, I add a few more choice words before and after “damn” when discussing the Yankees. 😁

Spending time down south in in Texas (that's its own special place), I can say firsthand, if an unsophisticated southerner learns you are from NYC area, they automatically think you are rude, nasty, mob adjacent and that's just for starters.

I am sure our Alabama friend is not one of them however.

Let's all give him and his family the proper NYC treatment at the Garden, we NY-ers are polite, friendly and nice to counterbalance the image some of our southern brethren have of us.

I was disappointed thatbamafan hasn’t taken the lead here and offered to be the host/ guide for Bamaguy , at least for the game day activities . I’m only being facetious , Bama . .

I don’t recall if bamafan goes to games but , if he does , maybe he can meet up with Crimson Tide fan . As Brook Jersey stated , it would be nice to show this visitor some NY Hospitality .
More accurately St John’s hospitality at games .

I do take exception to the notion that Southerners are Unsophisticated though . I have lived in S Carolina now , for 15 years and lack knowledge or smarts .

Try getting your children or grandchildren into Vanderbilt , Univ of Virginia , Duke , Wake Forest , Washington and Lee Univ, Ga Tech , Davidson , or several other elite schools .
It won’t be easy .

And , the facts are , the exodus of people from the Northeast , Midwest to Southern states is enormous .

It’s gotten so pronounced that it’s hard to find a native born Southerner in everyday life .

That statistic not withstanding , many true Southern folks are quite smart , very savvy on current events and have delightful manners and class.

I know Brook Jersey didn’t mean his comment as a slur but , nevertheless , it needed rebuttal .

I have a granddaughter who is a Nursing Student at the Univ of S Carolina in Columbia and she’s from Port Washington on Long Island and could have gone to College most anywhere but , choose SC as the best fit for her .

Anyway , that’s my opinion .

Agree I've been in NC for 14 years and when I go to K of C meetings seems like everyone is from one of NY, NJ or a midwestern state; of course that's a Catholic gathering so perhaps a little skewed. But lots of good people everywhere and that includes NY and NJ for absolute certain. I'll always be a NYer at heart regardless of where I'm living.

You're correct that certain areas of the south have many northeasterners (esp ny nj and ct) who have retired or relocated there for work. Charleston, Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham and many other places have such populations among others (TN is another, a zero income tax state).

Still, among natives there is still a simmering distrust of Yankees. I did business in West Virginia, Southern Ohio, Kentucky Arkansas, Texas, and other southern states. I found that as you say there are great people everywhere but in the South as a northerner you have to earn their trust. Some of my most authentic and enduring relationships were made in the South. Great, honest people who live by faith.

So know I wasn't remotely thinking of NY Yankee hate. As a Mets fan, we have our own problems right now.

I understand if some thought i meant baseball Yankees. As northerners we have zero hostility against the south and we dont think twice. Most of us had ancestors abroad during the civil war. But in the deep south hostilities remain.

Have worked for decades with people and companies in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida not to mention many of the other 46 states and European countries.
Natives or transplants, everywhere people are people, everywhere there nice ones and a$$holes, from every region, nation, race or gender, even France.
Generalizations about people are just ridiculously inane, with all due respect to all.

Have you ever been outside of New York? To southerners we are all Yankees, with New Yorkers just about the worst of them. Nothing to do with the baseball team, silly.

Honestly though, I never really knew about all that love till I did business in the South.
Fair enough. Anyone south of Philly is a southerner to most of us.

Good point Logen. I know you are not a Springsteen fan but my wife is a huge fan and whenever this subject comes up (I.e. generalizing about groups whether geographical, ethnic whatever) she always refers back to a 60 Minutes interview he did about 15 years ago where he said something close to “I’ve been all over the world in the last 20 years and what I can tell you is there are aholes and good people everywhere”.

I lived and worked in Delaware for a spell. The people had no definable identity. 30 south of Philly and 30 minutes north of the Mason Dixon Line. They weren't from the Northeast nor were they southern. I dubbed the place Dela-nowhere. And Delawhere?
Since this is way off topic already... when I was working, my boss lived in Wilmington, took Amtrak up every morning and got into the office between 7:30 and 8 every day at Park and 47th. I lived in Queens and it was a chore to to get me there at 8:15.

But he originally was from CT, went to school at Delaware and stayed.

But I hope the OP has a good time in NYC.

Let's be real. The Klan was strong in the south, lynchings occurred mostly in the south, and the lack of racial integration occurred more prevalently in the south. Adolph Rupp refused to play against st johns unless Solly walker was benched. When Frank McGuire said i'll take the forfeit win, Rupp had his players injure Walker. Fans overall said boo. When blacks were given the vote, immediately there were more elected black legislators than at ant time in our history. Southern states then redistricted so there was almost none. Jackie Robinson had the hardest time dealing with hatred from southern players, Dixie Walker notably.

That's not to paint with a wide brush but to think there historically has not been prevalent animosities in various places in the country is just putting your head in the sand. Thankfully, certain groups that were not even protected classes 20 years ago are slowly being accepted. But we have a long way to go.

So yes, there are good people everywhere but there are also certain realities being from new york that you msy surprise you.

You just brought back a lot of old memories 35+ years ago of the hell White Chocolate had to go through to earn playing time on the hard courts of the mean streets of Glen Cove 😀
