Around the Big East 25-26

What a dk!! Didn't realize I had to share your opinion to post here. Must have missed that in the rules when I registered.

Anyhow, the preseason rankings are a farce, doesn't matter if we have a single digit next to it, a double digit, or no digits.
You can certainly post here. It's more fun when people disagree.

I just don't understand why a STJ fan wouldn't be happy about being preseason ranked (and, yes, they're a farce, ask Kansas fans, but they're at least a fun thing to talk about & unique to sports).

The thing I probably disagree with most on the board is poo-poo'ing the college landscape. Sure, it's still a mess. But it's always been a mess. The professionalization of college sports is the #1 reason why STJ is back on top. Just enjoy it.

How is it a farce? It's a barometer of how you're viewed to start the season. Does it mean anything in the grand scheme of things? Not really. But it's great for optics, especially for a program like SJU that hasn't been preseason ranked in two decades. It matters to sell to recruits and portal transfers that you are on that level.

Why you'd be upset about it is beyond me. SJU finally matters and is recognized around the country...literally for the first time on a two year consistent basis since Jarvis was here...it's the best shape the program has been in overall and through the lens of the public and talking heads since Coach Lou patrolled the sidelines.

It all matters to a degree when you are trying to reshape the perception and build back up the brand.

Increases ticket sales, merchandise revenue, public perception and publicity as well. We’re just not used to this lol.

Willard should be grumpy in this challenging year.;

Has he complained about the schedule yet? Because you know that's coming. Probably some others because of his connection with so many BE coaches -- the mentor in Rick, the mentor's son in RPJ, his "replacement" up in South Orange who he mentored, gave his first job and apparently had a falling out with while at St. Peter's (on some level, don't know if its water under the bridge), the guy in DC who I feel like Willard was always compared to when one took over PROV and the other took over the Hall. Plus the inevitable Kim English stuff you KNOW is coming.

St John’s is back on top because of Coach Pitino. #NuffSaid

We will see if he learned anything from last year's debacle. Per Hall fans, they are wrestling with much of the same stuff we did when a former great player took over the program (although Sha wasn't on Mullin's level for sure as a player, and Sha has already accomplished more as a coach, as much as it pains me to say that about Mully). They believe Sha is entirely resistant to hiring a GM to deal with the portal/NIL stuff for various reasons, including program control, and that no one in the AD has any way in what he does. He hasn't show the ability to "adapt" in this new world, and they are already concerned that he's going with the same playbook, such as wanting to roll with 10-11 kids as opposed to a smaller core. They also question whether he can coach a team that purportedly tries to play fast because of personnel, since his style has always been more of a slower, grind it out pace. And while he is a bit more visible lately, he tends to operate that program with a "lock and key mentality", which is wild because it is one that struggles to get any sort of attention and buzz even when they are really good like Powell's senior year.

For what it's worth, I think they will be better, but that may be more of a reflection of the middle/lower end of the Big East not being as strong. Also, Sha has been raving about the PG transfer Budd Clark. Don't know how his game will translate from Merrimack.
