Thank You and Good Luck Sim

It's not that simple.

There will be turnover every year...that's inevitable now. But the teams that can retain half of their rosters are the teams that are going to win consistently. Florida and Houston returned almost everyone.

You aren't going to be able to develop a Maker or Glover now. You aren't going to be able to retain a Dunlap to be the 8th man. Understood, but you have to find the RJ's and the Zuby's and keep them for 2-3. You have to find kids like Ayo who will stick around for 4 years and play the 8th man role. You have to get those international players that come in knowing they won't play much their first year. And of course, you have to add 3-5 guys in the portal.

Pitino knows this.
It is that simple. It is a one year system right now under these rules. Anybody operating under a different timeline is not smart IMHO.

Duke and Kentucky, the model programs, are clearly operating on year-to-year timeline.

Brilliant assessment. That is the blueprint. Well said. Thanks.

I promised myself I wouldn’t post much anymore for fear of being banned again but thought I would chime in here. As many know, I was never a Wilcher fan. Was he a nice kid, sure, fine team mate, I guess but I was never in the locker room. My judgement of him was purely on his in game performances. Did he have some fine moments, yes he did, as one mentioned, the pass to Zuby for the game winner was a winning play.

My criticism of him was his weak handle, his long range shooting and his weak on ball defense against quality guards which was clearly exposed in the Arkansas game where aside from him only scoring 2 points, spent more time on the bench from getting beat by their back court. Im not going to mention maturity issues cause in today’s game he’s not alone.

Could he have stayed and improved his game perhaps but obviously the coaching staff thought otherwise, hence Pitino’s priority of bring in multiple two guards. If you trust the process then you should not be complaining about his departure.

What I find head scratching and borderline hypocritical is that the very same people who support players getting large pay days and bringing in players from rival teams are now upset with the process when it hits home. And why is Wilcher being viewed as a victim when no one here even knows the reason behind his departure. Is he leaving cause he’s being recruited over or because he may be making more money elsewhere? I’m sure the kid as a college student will be making more money then most wage earners in a family of 4 will make, in fact it’s probably not even close.

Speaking of generations, I’m of the older generation. I’ve come to the realization of either I stop watching the sport or I come to terms with the reality of the situation which is what Coach P has clearly stated….. this is a business and these kids are professionals.. The NCAA is not coming in on the white horse to save the day, it is what it is and may be like this for some time to come.

Post of the year!!! Captured everything about NCAA Basketball 2025

Good luck Sim! Loved watching you.
Just a big ol kid out there balling.
We would rewatch his facial expressions over and over. Im going to miss watching you mature. A winning team needs players like Simeon Wilcher.

That is the exception, not the rule. Duke has 3 lottery picks and 2 other kids later in mocks. There are 60 draft picks and half of those kids are not in the NCAA...do the math on that. How many teams can win with that model?

Your being overly reductive on this. Even Pitino wouldn't agree with you.

To be clear, I know Pitino finishes off this roster exceptionally well. I have absolutely zero concern there.

Pitino has accepted it is a business now.

We will agree to disagree, lets move on from the back and forth

By all accounts, Sim is a great kid and teammate
He certainly improved from year one to year two
But, now in year three, he expected to play more and have a bigger role on the team
But looking at the recruiting that CRP has done, it appears highly unlikely that such would be the case
Ergo, Sim has to leave to find a school where he can play more minutes and be a more influential player
The system certainly sucks. Selfishly, I would have loved for him to stay at St John's
But, under the "rules" that we play under these days, I understand his decision and don't blame him one bit for leaving
Best of luck at your new school Sim. I will continue to root for you. You'll always be a Johnnie to us!!

Maybe Seton Hall builds around Sim? Are they interested? I’m surprised that Brady Glover and Sim didn’t package themselves with the same agent and stayed together. That would truly benefit a rebuilding team. I get it, we won’t be rebuilding under CRP, we will be reloading.
Seton Hall would still be in the doldrums if they were to (which they won't) land Wilcher. As much as I like Wilcher; he's not a player you "build around." Currently, he's not a focal point of a team and he may not ever be a focal point of a team. But that isn't to say he can't be a solid player on anyone's team.

A little tally at this moment looks like this :

Outgoing :
1 Luis
2. Dunlap
3 Glover
4. Wilcher - in portal , likely gone
5 . Makar

Incoming :
1 Hopkins
2 Sanon
3. Sellers

Maybes:
1 Jackson
2 Lewis .

Luis and Wilcher were 2 Starters and , had those 2 years of learning the Pitino system
Which would mean getting new players to replace KR and Scott .
Plus , Smith as a 6 th Man

Replacing RJ is probably the toughest role to fill . I hope Hopkins , different type of Athlete and player , is up to it . Scott more easily replaced by Sanon or Sellers or, Jackson if he commits .

In Sim , we lose the 2 years of Pitino’s investment , a great looking shot and , still unrealized potential . Plus , a total team player and great personality that nearly everyone applauds from the fan base .

So.we still need a starting PG and Back up and , Jackson to finally commit and , stay committed.
These days you never know

Wilcher is obviously coveted elsewhere . Certainly Texas might be in play as Miller saw him all last season. . Sean is a very good Coach and can upcoach Players very well .

It sure does look like Wilcher is gone . Hopefully doesn’t land in the BE , especially UCONN, Creighton , or Marquette .
Texas would be ok . Florida ? Arkansas ? UNC ?

Baylor ?

Hard to know , until the other shoe drops .

I would be shocked beyond belief if he landed with the coaches of these 3 teams: UCONN, Creighton , or Marquette.
But the name of the game is portal mania, so who knows

If you showed these numbers to most high major coaches without the name and the picture, they wouldn't even give the person a thought. They would say AAC or A-10.

Hope Sim can get to a place like Texas and Miller. He is a great kid

If we are ranked 5th next January, few people will express any regrets over the upheaval of roster.

No one really cared about the kids who left when Pitino came in, especially when it became clear it was a much better team than what Anderson had left.

And if we return to mediocrity, crazed new fans who showed up for the last quarter of the season will also disappear. Fans have always been free to act in their own best interests.

Players do what's best for them. It's always been that way, but now they have more freedoms to find the best situations each season.

It's just the way the free world works.

Still and all, everyone feels a little less emotionally invested in sju basketball right now.
