SJU Portal Targets

You take Mitchell for his athleticism, length, and defensive prowess. If you have good shooters around him, he can be a poor man's Stacey Augmon for St. John's

Don't pass on former 5-star recruits
a very poor man's... like guys in the corner of the R train at 3am poor man's...

That is so funny!!

Dear East Coasters - As I’ve been dealing with the time difference in the Far East now for 8 weeks, I can fully commiserate with Bangkok Johnny. In the middle of the day when we have time to enjoy some good portal talk, it’s crickets. Very boring! Maybe when you get up to pee in the middle of the night, you can drop a quick post and tell us what lineups you’re dreaming about or maybe just weigh-in on some contentious issues like whether Ayo is a good or great defender. We’ll take anything. Here’s wishing there’s a way to brighten OUR day during YOUR night.

From what I have read you are correct in analyzing his skillset. His value is on the glass, the defensive end and a high level of athleticism. I read he is a good passer as well. It seems clear that shooting is a weakness, but perhaps Pitino can sell him on his ability to upgrade his shooting skills.

We have a number of slots to fill and given his strengths, it sounds like there should be room on the roster for someone like Mitchell.

If he is an Aaron Scott type, but with less 3 point ability and better defensive rebounding skills, he will be a major asset to the team.

He seems to be a great finisher on fast breaks too
He's 2x the athlete of Scott, better defender who's a lot less foul prone, better rebounder, and better around the rim.

Only thing Scott has the edge on is three point shooting (although Mitchell can hit an occasional 3), and FTs.

There's a reason Rick wanted Mitchell last year!

I think he’s a different defender, not ready to call him a better defender than Scott. A few posters from NC on here will have your head! Lol

The biggest thing to me is we wouldn't have to worry about Mitchell getting in foul trouble. He averaged more minutes and half the fouls, with more blocks and steals. His off ball defense, in particular, is truly excellent.

Last time we had a defender as good as Aaron Scott was Justin Simon. That’s a high bar but look forward to watching Mitchell play for us and judging for myself. Just my opinion but have never believed that you can judge a players defensive ability by stats and Scott is a perfect example of that.

It’s also nice that we’ll have more options if he does pick up fouls. Scott was our stopper for bigger wings and forwards and he was required to be physical, sometimes to a detriment. I would imagine Mitchell fouls at a higher rate in our system too.

oh i Love Mitchell- think he's covering a lot of what we are losing... just Plastic Man is an entirely different tier lol...

FYI, I know he just decommited and is a HS guy, but we're listed for Acaden Lewis.

"According to 247Sports sources, a few schools to consider for Lewis are Maryland, Villanova, Georgetown, and St. John's."

Advanced stats, especially for defense, are always iffy, but he's top 7 in the country according to Miya. Scott was 44th.

Scott edges him out, barely, by DPM and defensive rating.

But the tape shows Mitchell has on another planet athletically.

If you can't tell, I'm really excited about the add. lol. Gives Pitino a lot of variations, and we can easily have the most athletic/best defensive front court with Mitchell/Prey/Zuby at times (but hopefully not too long)

Posted the other day how the perfect backup PG for this team would a high 4 star Freshman that only needed to play 8-10 mins per game in his Freshman season and then potentially be our starting PG his Soph season. Not sure if he'd be agreeable to minimal minutes in year 1 and that's probably why he decommitted from UK but would be the ideal scenario for us.
