I think that is a fair assumption, though, right? We knew Scott coming in was a defensive add, but Kadary and RJ were never defense first guys. Zuby was a bench piece. Rick was able to coach those three into being some of the top defenders in the country (think Kadary and Zuby were like top 25 or something). I like the idea of bringing in big, athletic kids that can shoot. I would assume size, strength and quickness are assets when it comes to learning defense. But if you can't shoot, well, you may never learn to shoot.
I agree with the shooting part but disagree with the rest. Kadary was always an outstanding defender. Zuby outplayed Soriano the prior year; the main improvement in his game was from a scoring standpoint. RJ is a freak athlete and the defense and rebounding he produced last year were similar to the prior year except he wasn't injured and got more minutes.

Sure you can take guys who aren't defensively oriented and - if they're willing - make them better defenders. But to play the way we did last year, or the way Houston does, there is a certain irreducible level of athleticism that is needed in addition to a whole lot of desire. And you also need a defensive IQ (Kadary was off the charts at that). Sanon and Sellers may have all of that, I haven't seen them play. I think Bryce Hopkins will be limited in that regard. Dillon MItchell, there are zero questions about.

As I commented in the NCAA thread, for example, I think the only player on Florida who could play for Houston is Billy Richards. Maybe Chinylou, maybe Martin. The rest of them (including Clayton as good as he is) just don't have what it takes to play that way.

Just think that most fans spend too much time on offense and don't appreciate what goes into defense.

All I know is what ever of this group we get will be talented. Also having continuity with Zuby and Wilcher coming back key. I think Ruben takes a jump. 7 months away I’m excited. We got champagne 🍾 who would have thought.
