SJU Portal Targets

Disappointing end of season but we basically cleared the cobwebs in a great season few saw coming. NCAAT win, 2X BE Champs. Historic.

To now look like favorites for a former 5* McD AA leaving UNC to possibly come here…is insane. My only concern is his mental game & defense, but I trust Rick is being very straightforward. Probably said if you aren’t willing to defend then don’t come. I think Rick’s candor & honesty are refreshing to kids today.

Lee-Sanon-Jackson-Zuby-Hopkins actually may be possible. My goodness. Just a few short years ago we were dumpster diving for “hidden gems” with competitors like Tulane, UAB, Boston College. Now we’re looking to pluck All Americans from UN freaking C. If this lineup comes to fruition we have a real shot to repeat as BE champs & obv beyond. We will finally have a team that can shoot & opps can’t zone us or pack paint easily anymore.

Would be shocked if he left Cal. Has a definite role with him, family relationship, great program, plenty of money, etc.

If he were coming back East, I'd have to think Seton Hall would unload their entire NIL budget (whatever that is) to reel him in, because they are listed with all these kids that never come to fruition.
I would not be shocked, a lot of chatter about him entering portal, likely destination unknown.

Let’s not act like Lee sucks now and we didn’t want him anyway if he chooses Florida. Let’s see what happens But Lee is a great player. That being said though if Florida gets Lee I am confident we will move on and find a point guard like Wright from Baylor or somebody we don’t even know about yet.

Seton Hall..lol. He ain’t leaving Arkansas and Calipari to play for that Dumpster Fire. Seton Hall ain’t getting that type of talent right now.

Could he leave to play for another great coach in Pitino? Sure but SHU no way.

The problem I see with Lee is that his competition was very poor, and we signed/are involved with guys that don't exactly impress on defense. That's a really big shift from who we were this year. I understand adding more offense and becoming a more balanced team, but I don't think he's the best fit for us. I do think there are really good schools like Florida and Alabama he would fit with better.

The truth is Pitino has never been a great offensive coach like a lot of the coaches that have been in the elite eight the last few years. We need to build a team closer to the Houston mold.

Now if Sanon was a lock-down defender, you have more wiggle room. But he isn't -- at least not yet.

I'm personally not sold on Lee. I think his game looks great in the videos and I can appreciate all the positive posts from people much smarter than me when it comes to basketball so if we land him then I'll be excited to see what he can do. But, on the other hand, if we miss out then I will hope it is because the staff found a better fit for the program.

I do get leery with these guys coming up a level. Obviously, it can work out (see Clayton), but it can also backfire (see Mahaney). As much as I trust Rick in evaluating talent, I'm sure people in CT also trust Hurley the same. I recall some members of the board in an uproar when Hurley got Mahaney thinking he was the type of player that would bury SJU. Obviously, that didn't work out.

My point being I don't see Lee as a guaranteed day one contributor like I would if the staff pulled a PG out of the SEC or ACC. Maybe he was hidden away in the Ivy League for three years and was under the radar and he will excel here, or maybe the game will be too fast and the competition too strong for him. It really is a coin flip when you look at these guys outside of power conferences.

Some chatter on DJ Wagner hitting the portal. Honestly, I would prefer him over Lee only for the reason he has proven he can play in a league like the BE. His game isn't perfect, but he made our guys look terrible in the 2nd half and if he can drive and dish to shooters then that is fine with me.
