Back in the 2017-18 season, the season fell apart when Marcus Lovett injured his knee in a late November game vs. UCF. A few weeks later I was at a reception where Coach Chris Mullin spoke about the tailspin that followed. Someone asked him about what season might have been with a healthy Lovett. Basically would not take the excuse dangled, and said injuries are a part of the game and the team had to play better. The season was trashed but over 4 days in February we beat #4 Duke and #1 Villanova, the only bright spot in a horrible season.
Few teams can weather the loss of one of their best players.
Lavins initial campaign here was cruising towards a deep March run when Brownlee broke a finger on his shooting hand, and sunk when DJ went down.
Smith at 100% is a difference maker. If he was lost for the season, with Brady already on the shelf, could be crushing.
